I have very strong opinions on this movie i've never seen. I took a course on the original text pass/fail in Spring semester of my senior year of college, only barely passing on the strength of my skimming the Cliff Notes, AMA Actually, it was the Illiad, but nevermind that little distinction.

I think people confuse actuarial risk with individual risk tolerance. This is why the entire insurance industry exists, and why insurance should be a tool to improve collective welfare.

As @pwnallthethings.bsky.social pointed out yesterday, basically any retirement account is gambling much more than $50k on a much worse expected return. You just aren’t making the choice yourself; you’re paying a fee to someone else to calculate the expected values for you and make the decision.
