We really should have learned by now to listen to Marcotte. The dumbest thing one can do in trying to make strategic plans is ignoring the motivations of your opposition. (cf. Trump foreign policy) Seeing your opponents as rational actors with their own agency and motivations is the first step.

THIS. we should be focusing on our outrage at the IP theft. Honestly, paying used booksellers for the books that then get scanned/destroyed is a BETTER outcome than the previous straight-up theft. It's actually a small win for books! And it's not like they're not shredding 16th C first editions...

My most unpopular opinion is that not every book has historical and cultural significance and it is not, in fact, morally wrong to shred books. There are a shit ton of books out there that are "old" and "rare" and it's fine to shred them. They're in the Library of Congress probably.
