21 - Better Late Than Never Sunny does not quite get along with her brother. The feeling is mutual. CW: God's most uncomfortable family interactions.

That evening, as the sky was streaked with red and blue like Sunny's hair, she came downstairs to see Mama was already awake. The house was quiet, no conversation settling over the kitchen or footsteps creaking in the hall, and Mama was worrying her bottom lip the way she did when she was nervous.

The cause for that was a slim, blue-haired Miqo'te in pale blue robes with a missing arm.

Kiah'a sat at the kitchen table, an untouched mug of tea in front of him. Mama had a mismatched mug, her hands wrapped around it to hide the subtle shake that Sunny could see if she squinted. Kiah'a had his carbuncle by his feet. The creature looked a lot like a rabbit-dog, but apparently was made of magic. Sunny didn't really understand how it worked. It looked up at her and then sat back down, satisfied with what it saw.

There was no steam rolling off the cups. Sunny hadn't even heard the kettle whistle. How long ago had the others awoken, and why was she the last?

The journey from Tailfeather to Anyx Trine was an uneventful one, save for the occasional confrontation with the local Gnath population. Melodie had never realized how active they were in these regions. Perhaps she could propose helping cull their populations if they were of too much bother to the dragons? Though she doubt they'd have much trouble handling the Gnath themselves, there wasn't much else she could think to offer the dragons as concessions for their meeting.

The light flapping of leathery wings began to fill the air as the group drew closer to Anyx Trine. Ruins of architecture from a time long passed lined the worn stone path that led to the impressive towering structure before them. Melodie could feel the dozens of eyes watching their every move. Were they as conflicted over the resolution of the war as Ishgard was?

I've picked up a bit when visiting the region and interchanging with their fishers. It's not hard to make basic sushi but I know you and if it isn't professional quality you're going to get frustrated."

Foulques stood on the dock after everyone had long gone, staring up at the night sky as if he could send his hope – his desperation – off to the edge of the universe where his partner was. Maybe if he squinted hard enough up there he might see the ship returning – maybe he could be the one to announce that they were back.

Or maybe if he kept looking up there, praying to any god that might listen, hoping against all odds, then he could sense that his other half – his better half – was okay, was alive, was coming home to him.

Kiah'a spun around — or tried. There were no points of reference, so he may have held still for all he knew.

His head hurt. He looked down and saw his hands, his feet, his tail curling through the air — but no floor. He was bare to the world, but he was not even certain that this was a world. There was no sense in this dimension that he found himself in. Was he dead?

Wait, hands?

Kiah'a looked at his hands. Both of them. His brain felt empty. His blood ran cold. It had been moons since he last had two, yet they felt entirely normal. He turned them over. Besides the callouses from his lancework and swordwork, they were hale.

A severe, clever mouth finds the curve of his neck as the now-familiar brush of his lover's magic ripples against his own.

It is here at the edge of yesterday and tomorrow where they find themselves meeting, moon beckoning to sun, both of them soft-edged and sleepy as they curl into each other. Morning birdsong is joined by low voices murmuring inconsequential things to each other; on some occasions quiet conversation turns to breathless gasps and cries of pleasure, a joining of the flesh which leaves them loose-limbed and spent with salt drying on flushed skin, but just as often they are content to simply be. Theirs is a peace that has been hard won, and they have learned to cherish the time together they have been granted.
