Also, and I think maybe I need to write a follow up article about why it really doesn't do trans people any favors to pretend that anti-trans politicians' opposition to trans rights is about anything other than not wanting trans people to exist.

Some people replying to this piece really seem to think that "hmmm. Sounds like gender-affirming care to me!" is some devastating own, but it's not. It's simply not. From the end of my post:

So why do people keep trying to "gotcha" anti-trans politicians and public figures like this? Because hypocrisy is a comfortable diagnosis. A hypocrite shares your premises and misapplies them, which means the fix is cheap: point out the contradiction and wait for the shame to kick in. That frame keeps us in a world where everyone agrees on the rules and one side simply forgot to follow them. Describing the actual position costs more. This administration wants medical transition made as close to impossible as the courts will allow, for as many people as possible, at any age. Every policy it has produced points in the same direction. The ban. The care cutoff. The purge. And yes, the High-T video, which celebrates hormones in exactly one context: enforcing what a man is supposed to be. Say all of that out loud and there's no joke left. Nothing to dunk with, nothing to quote-tweet, nothing fun. Just a government methodically working to legislate people like me out of public life. "Gotcha" is easier, but it doesn't actually accomplish anything. That's the whole appeal.And if you want proof that nobody on the other side is squirming, look no further than how Fox News bundled up the dunks and ran them as a story about Democrats getting "roasted" for comparing testosterone treatments to gender-affirming care. The Daily Caller ran its own version. The dunk that was supposed to expose right-wing hypocrisy became right-wing content in under 24 hours. Nobody was embarrassed. Nobody was shamed. When American fascism ends, the perpetrators must be held accountable, but so too must the spineless craven enablers. It's not enough to focus on bread and butter issues (which must happen). We can't just move on. Any future Democratic candidate must have a real plan for denazification.

it’s hard to explain how much shit like this has radicalized people. like i’m a white middle-aged broad who’s always been liberal but i’ve gone full-on “abolish ICE/reform scotus/the next dem candidate must commit to mass prosecutions” and you will not sway me from that position.

This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days. ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.

When a politician dies we see a lot of hagiographies about them. If you mention they were a terrible person IRL, you get chastised. My feeling? If you don't want people to talk shit about you after you die, don't be shitty when you're alive.

On #July4 we celebrate freedom, but it's also a time to reflect on the work still left to do. Throughout US history, not everyone has shared equally in that promise. Farm workers have always helped build this country, feeding our communities. They are part of our nation's story.
