I am a researcher in mathematics and physics working on complex quantum systems and quantum field theory. Recently, I am also interested in earth observation.

"We're all worried," as what it means to do research (in my field, Theoretical CS) seems to be shifting, and shifting fast. What to do? Senior researchers must lead by example, knowing that not everything will pan out. What I'm suggesting below may not work everywhere, but here's my own advice: 1/

Some initial thoughts, and a complicated mix of feelings. Wow. I mean, Erdos problems are cool (I genuinely mean that), I didn't know about the Jacobian conjecture before it got disproved. But this newest batch from OpenAI hits home in a way the previous announcements did not.

The point isn’t to write an essay (or solve the problem sheet, etc). It’s to learn. It’s a foil against which the student can struggle and, in so doing, think. I’ve not seen this video by Burnham, but the wider sentiment — “essays are pointless because AI can write them” — is depressingly common.

Full of despair today. Massive lay offs in social sciences and humanities across the country, Burnham puts out a video saying 'AI can write an essay', and my university is busy integrating co-pilot into all staff and student computers. We are being told we're defunct and there's no resistance.

The last point is actually very troubling: there is a huge inequality in the access to frontier models right now. Some people are simply not aware of this AI revolution, some cannot afford paying 200$ per month, especially in less developed countries (and even in developed!). 5/n

While the Fields Medal celebrates the under-40s, the mathematician Joan Birman has, at the age of 99, solved a major open problem in representations of the Braid groups, a topic she has worked on for more than 60 years.

From January 1st 2026, the CNRS will cut access to one of the largest commercial bibliometric databases, Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science, along with the Core Collection and Journal Citation Reports.

If you find it strange that the inequality involves two arbitrary states, operator-valued weights come to your aid, giving meaning to the inverse of a state. This way, the inequality becomes a statement about the cp-odering of maps from B(H) to the subalgebras associated with systems B and BC.

Small paper w/ @lvanluijk.bsky.social and @stotti-alex.bsky.social: We revisit the amazing operator inequality by Lin et al. (arXiv:2211.13372), which implies strong sub-additivity of entropy and find that it's a special case of Connes' theory of spatial derivatives: arxiv.org/abs/2508.03731
