Anyone dabbling in games crit has to watch game design talks about games they crit to remind themselves how detached player perception is from the actual development. Devs will regularly directly admit things that players will spent hours upon hours arguing against when critics point it out

One of the most consistently damaging thought patterns among players is treating skill level as static and games as exams rather than something more like instruments. You walk in with whatever skills you had, you get tested & graded and you walk out. It leads to *a lot* of negative trends

Talk about a strong first impression. Been playing this one level over and over again from the very recent and new demo of Sonic XG. I had just started revisiting Sonic Advance 2 and was liking the boost system there, so seeing it applied to a classic style game is a dream.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins is the most “never give up” game ever man. Had a run, was going beautifully, only died once UNTIL Stage 5-2. I just fucking eat shit to my last life, then just locked in and no missed to the final boss and got it.

I deeply hate this Whig History-style mentality. Not only is it untrue if you look into how notable older games were developed, not only does it undervalue the importance of experiential knowledge & over values theoretical knowledge but it obfuscates how clueless so many designers are RIGHT NOW

a worrying trend I keep hearing from ppl who want to sound smart when they talk about old games and it happens with fighting games way too often is ppl saying "nobody knew how to make games yet" as if there were no traceable dna of every solid mechanic and design they believe to have value
