I used to make choices based on what helps students learn. Now I make choices like I'm trying to identify replicants with the Voight-Kampff test
I'm going back to in-class exams this semester, which are harder to schedule, less intellectually rigorous, slower to grade, harder to secure, more prone to error, harder to provide disability acommodations for, and use up a lot more paper than online exams. AI makes everything worse.
I feel like the whole world got a taste of what it's like to sit around a grad seminar table.
SUSAN ORLEAN HAS JOINED THE ENEMY IN THE ODYSSEY WARS
I’ve been saying “there was no sex, and the food looked terrible” when actually the quote is (i checked): “There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible.” Thus illustrating the continuing power of oral transmission/experimentation/revision in a culture seemingly dominated by writing etc
We've gotta make the Monorail Simpsons episode required viewing for every city councilor in the country. Every single thing he says here is a lie. A Potemkin Village Imaginarium.
Hassett: "Data centers are very good for towns bc they create so many jobs & bring people in with high incomes that can buy houses & stuff like that. So if you take a sleepy town that hasn't seen much in the last 30 years & put a data center there, there are gonna be a bunch of happy residents."
“…Rulli is an Italian surname and Emmer a German one. I am a historian…that the exact same kind of nativist nonsense was spewed by earlier generations of Americans who had last names like Emmer and Rulli…German-Americans were actually the first group of immigrants who sparked a serious panic…”
In recent weeks, congressmen like Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) and Rep. Michael Rulli (R-OH) have leveled racist attacks against immigrant communities in their districts. As I note in CAMPAIGN TRAILS, a century ago those same racist attacks were being made against people named Emmer and Rulli.
I resent that I know what a hip dip is. This shit is so stupid and also more of the same.
imagine getting dunked on by Playboy for being weird about women’s bodies
What are the incel men up to over on X? Focussing on a quirk of women’s bodies most of us have never even thought about before now. Our take? "Making women mad and getting likes from fellow incels is all they have going for them." Read now: www.playboy.com/read/sex/the...
i don't believe anyone has "good-faith" concerns about trans women in sports in 2026. there's been too much time to hear the actual evidence, the actual people affected, and the role the debate plays in attempts to purge trans people from American life. anybody picking that side has made a choice
enough of this shit
They were both born in Rochester Hills how the fuck is the Muslim not a Michigander
What the fuck?? “While Mr. El-Sayed is fringy and radical, he’s also a Muslim man. Ms. Stevens is a white woman. This puts her at a disadvantage in the identity Olympics that internal Democratic Party politics have become.” www.wsj.com/opinion/free...
Watching the same old bullshit old guard xenophobia and racism rear its head in this MI senate race is pissing me OFF. I’m so tired.
Ah yes, a Muslim man. The most beloved identity demographic in America. A one-way fast-track ticket to political success. Especially in the midwest!

People who express, embody, and enliven social prejudices often use personal emotional intimacy as an excuse, and I believe that shouldn't matter when real and potential social/material harms result from their actions
enough of this shit
I also appreciate Emily Wilson as a woman in a male dominated role, by which I don’t mean translator or classicist or public scholar but rather “curmudgeon.”
I am being good and saying no to things so that I can focus on finishing my book revisions. I just had a baffling exchange with a publisher after I said I wouldn’t be able to do a review in their timeline. They offered me more book credits… which was never the issue.
This is a monumental loss and also what an amazing life lived. Rest in power Ms. Saar.

People who think Emily Wilson is being mean have clearly never presented a paper at an academic conference
It was a pleasure to knock doors in the Fourth Ward with my friend, Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist! With just 8 days until Election Day, every conversation matters. Join our team for this final push and sign up for a canvassing shift on our website, #A2Council!
I have just seen a woman wearing what is clearly a cream fedora and not a cowboy hat.
Shout out to the kid on Pauline offering parking for $59 to try and undercut his neighbor. (I only briefly saw this as I biked past, but it did not seem to be an especially effective move.)
I’ve never understood the far right’s preoccupation with things they don’t consume, like literature and the research of Black professors. It takes up so much of their time for things they will never engage with any seriousness.
Now the people in cowboy boots also have cowboy hats. And they’re carrying red solo cups. #a2council

Actual faculty getting silenced and fired for their work from the right, and the big issue for a whole bunch of the commentariat is whether there is political discrimination against imagined faculty.
Tenure exists to safeguard #academicfreedom, which is necessary for all who teach & conduct research in higher ed. When faculty members can lose positions because of their speech, publications, or research findings, they cannot properly fulfill their responsibilities to advance & transmit knowledge.
UT Austin doubles down on denial of tenure to leading borderlands tech scholar: “In an emailed statement to Inside Higher Ed, a UT spokesperson said, ‘Tenure is privilege, not a right.’” www.insidehighered.com/news/quick-t...
I want to finish revising this chapter so that I can finish revising this chapter but also so that I can write a footnote about Gloria Greenfield quitting lesbianism to marry a man and make other poor decisions.
It’s not a university if one person has authority to deny tenure & they use that authority to purge scholars with opposing viewpoints. Welcome to Texas. bsky.app/profile/jpyg...
UT leaders choosing ideology over excellence. Iván’s case is a warning for all faculty across the university,” said Lauren Gutterman, former chair of the American Studies department. “Because it suggests that achieving excellence in your field is no longer enough to secure tenure and promotion.”
