In the books, Spirit's dad is canonically a black horse with no markings, but that isn't the case in the movies cause Spirit is a dunskin mustang. So at least 1 of his parents would have to carry the dun gene. In the books, his mom is a dun palomino, so she would carry it but doesn't in the movie.
I need you all to understand how engrained this is in my brain, I probably say this more than I say actual words. I dont even partake in ytps.
