I DID IT! AFTER ABOUT 12 HOURS! vterm in emacs w/nerdfonts. The issue wasn't emacs, but nerdfonts code-points. I had to redownload a new build of Iosevka that has updated material icon code points. The signal gpg had a "tofu" (unknown unicode square symbol) instead of this keyshield icon. YAY!
