There is a very significant chance that the entire Research and Development program at the US Forest Service is going to be dismantled in the coming weeks. This is going to be devastating and will hamstring our ability to manage public lands and the wildlife that depend on them.
The Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases NSF program has been archived. Huge loss. Does anyone know if the current proposals in the queue for funding will not be reviewed or are panels still happening?
I fear that, especially now, scientists getting off Twitter where we can engage with the general public and instead siloing ourselves here is a very big mistake. We need to share what we do and why it's important with the broadest possible audience.
Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

Week 2 of tracking Deer 665's fall migration. She made a rather large movement during the first couple weeks of November. Many deer often stopover before leaving the foothills and heading south to winter range. Will be interesting to see if 665 does the same.

New paper: the risk disturbance literature is full of examples of humans changing animal behavior, but how often do these changes affect populations or communities? TLDR it’s much muddier than you might expect. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Really proud of this paper and the opportunity to work with the Stacks! I definitely recommend it for folks trying to break out of the toxic for-profit publishing groups.
How does cannabis farming affect wildlife? There’s been rapid growth of #cannabis farms in the US, but little is known about how #wildlife are impacted. So Phoebe Parker-Shames and her colleagues Ben Goldstein & Justin Brashares studied this question. Here’s what they found 🧵
The comments are all crapping on the technology and math, but it seems like many don't understand the idea. The idea is store lots of C with a small mass of the powder by quickly absorbing it and releasing it over and over again with low energy on industrial scales. That's the idea.
