I come from the generation of Black people who were told that we need to "act right" so we don't lose the opportunity to change things from the inside, only to learn that we will compromise ourselves into protecting the very things that are destroying us.
The day my dad passed, I didn't believe it was happening. My mom had called me home the previous day because he'd lost consciousness and they believed it was the end. So I flew home and sat with him. He regained consciousness and seemed fine. He ate, had some ice cream, and basically seemed fine.
My mom didn't know who I was today.

The longer you live, the more you change. Some change is intentional. Other changes, not so much. And everyone has a ripple effect on your life, some miniscule, some huge. My changes had me spiraling into a period of self-hatred that I'm only now finding the strength to push back on.
