Yesterday I was reading an academic book and learned that more than 500 children died in automobile accidents in New York City in 1914 alone, most after being struck by cars. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I tried to verify the number and found this poster from 1917.

There are some ways teaching doesn’t change no matter how much time passes. Kids are kids. School is school. And yet, teaching in the last 5-10 years has become so dramatically different that it’s hard to believe it’s even the same (one) job.

Kindergarten has become first grade. Children are expected to leave K reading basic texts and writing sentences. If success is strictly defined as such, there is no reason to expect K teachers to offer play, art, social interaction. But 3rd grade teacher like me are dealing with the fallout.

Teachers who insist on avoiding, denying, or downplaying sociopolitical issues are doing their students a disservice. Events outside the classroom affect our work inside the classroom.
NYC has an anti-Muslim problem. We finally have a Muslim mayor, an historic win for sure, but the reality is Muslims in this city are struggling. Hate speech is inescapable, both online and in the streets. Council members incite violence against their own constituents.
If you are a teacher who your students don't feel comfortable asking for help, get out of education. If you are a union who thinks it's great that students do not feel they can talk to their teachers, shut down.
