Check out this lovely flag from Muchow, Germany, featuring a lovely fly! Why a fly? Well, in flag design there is a practice called "canting" where elements that sound like place names are used in the heraldry! In this case "Mucha" means fly! Seems like a place I'd want to visit... #FliesAreCool

I’ve found this beautiful black soldier fly with dark blue wings, and cool Hypnotoad-like eyes. The Netherlands are too northern for it. I found it in a zoo, not as an exhibit, but it probably hitchhiked here with a tropical plant. It’s harmless & uninvasive. #flies #diptera #naturephotography

One of the California-endemic predaceous assassin flies is the Antioch hammertail (Efferia antiochi), and is associated with restricted habitats such as the Antioch Dunes. This species was last documented in the 1950s. Lost species? We do not know…yet. 🪰 #Diptera #Asilidae
