A hallmark of Old Latin is its OI vowel, which regularly became Ū in the classical language – e.g. oinos > ūnus 'one'. Another is how early acquisitions from Greek lost any aspirated consonants, turning Φ (PH) into plain P. Put together, Greek Φοῖνιξ 'Phoenician' would become Latin Pūnicus 'Punic'.
