I used to only work in ink and markers. I had a portfolio review done only once and the recommendation I got was to try spray paint. Granted I didn't actually start a new life doing graffiti, but I did take the advice of trying other, less controlled mediums for a while. Expand horizons etc.
Go to museums, read books, watch tv. Go outside of what you're trying to make and bring back something new that maybe doesn't even feel like it makes sense at first. Make it make sense. What's even the point if you don't challenge yourself?
LRP it's something I encountered with people doing comics for the first time, you only think about what other comics are doing. One of the most painful of my time in comics was encountering someone who had only looked at MY work and it was bizarre seeing my panel choices and pacing in front of me.
