From source to sea, the Tees Rivers Trust is committed to protecting, improving and conserving the River Tees and its tributaries!

Rain dodged ✅ Dolphins spotted 🐬 ✅ Eagles spotted 🦅 ✅ Seagrass spathes collected 🌱 ✅ What a week in Scotland with Mossy Earth @wilderfirths! 💙 We gathered vital seagrass material for future Tees restoration and started off the trip with a visit to @balancedhorizon to share ideas on spatting ponds 🌊💚

This World Water Week, we want to draw attention to our rivers. We all want clean, healthy rivers and thriving surrounding landscapes, yet our rivers are under increasing pressure.🧵⬇️

Tackling pollution in Lough Neagh, the UK and Ireland’s largest freshwater lake, requires collaboration and robust scientific evidence. 🧪 The CLEAR-Neagh project, led by UKCEH, is using advanced DNA-based methods to trace pollution across the catchment. Swipe for info about our recent workshop ➡️

A common misconception is that Riverfly monitoring is only for those living in rural areas, with access to gorgeous streams teeming with fly life... The Urban Riverfly scheme was developed to allow more meaningful monitoring to be done on rivers where sensitive riverflies are less commonly found.

An introduction to Urban Riverfly14 groups of invertebrates are counted in Urban Riverfly surveys. The RMI eight, plus six other groups not counted in standard Riverfly surveys. Why the six extra groups? They are more pollution-tolerant, making Urban Riverfly ideal for urban and modified rivers where riverfly numbers tend to be lower.

In Urban Riverfly scoring, abundances of pollution-tolerant invertebrates impact the score negatively.

Urban Riverfly scores can be used to provide a more detailed picture of the changes in river environments, particularly in areas that would consistently get low RMI scores.Who can do Urban Riverfly surveys? Urban Riverfly can be a starting point for new monitors – no experience needed! You just need to attend an Urban Riverfly training day. E-mail info@riverflies.org to find your local hub. If you’re already a trained Riverfly monitor, and you think your site would benefit from Urban Riverfly monitoring, you can upskill to learn to ID the extra groups – just contact your hub
co-ordinator for more information. Other than that, the methodology is the same as RMI.

🌱⛈️ Seagrass: 1. Thunderstorms: 0. A perfectly timed seed collection at Lindisfarne means these tiny seeds are now heading through our Hartlepool nursery, ready to support future restoration in the Tees. Thanks to to our volunteers, NIFCA and Lindisfarne NNR.! 💚🌊

Our Seasons of Connection sessions feature a range of fun and fascinating activities! July's session saw the group trying their hand at Thatching a new roof for a bug hotel that had been damaged. We harvested reeds , processed and tied them before attaching to the bug hotel 🐞🪲

A major milestone! Thanks to the team at @AVDawson, we've installed the first native oyster hoist nursery in the main River Tees. These mighty molluscs improve water quality and create refuge habitat. We'll monitor them monthly as we work towards creating an oyster reef in the estuary. 🦪💙

Some good news for our oceans this #WorldOceansDay. 🙌 We're replanting the UK’s seabed. 🦀 Working across 7 countries to rescue coral reefs. 🪸 Protecting turtles in Fiji by working with local communities.🐢 And championing the High Seas Treaty, to help protect 30% of the ocean by 2030. 🐋

What a week! First up, a few photos from our balsam bash with the Jennings Brewery team. 🍻🌿 It was great to meet the people behind the pints and see them get stuck into pulling Himalayan balsam ahead of our first public bash of the season. More photos to come!
