Nellie cleared her throat, and he turned slowly. His broad shoulders squared as he measured her with gray, unflinching eyes.

“I do not care for shadows in my doorway. Step forward.”

Nellie could not speak for a moment. Such a man naturally commanded her. He seemed powerful, severe, and entirely too confident. “I—I beg your pardon, sir,” she stuttered, her voice small in the vast room. “I am Nellie Moore.”

A brief unreadable softness touched his features before he stiffened, his expression once again a mask of stone. “I am Monsieur de Blanc, or Mr. De Blanc, as you Americans prefer.”

His thick French accent was like bourbon; it was smooth, but with a burn that unsettled her. Nellie stared, stunned. This was him, the man she was to marry. She had expected someone older, not this gentleman in his late twenties with a face so...strikingly symmetrical.

“Do find your breath, Mademoiselle. I have enough to manage today without adding a fainting spell to the afternoon’s agenda. I’ve never had much patience for delicate women.”

The insult was a splash of frigid water, bringing her back to herself. The orphan inside of her who spent her days scrubbing floors and managing unruly children suddenly bubbled to the surface. She adjusted the lace on her shoulders and met his gaze with a leveled stare that mirrored his own coldness.

“You needn’t worry, sir,” she said, her voice surprisingly crisp. “I am merely trying to reconcile the man in front of me with the one I was promised in the letters.”

A flicker of mild interest passed over his face. “Is that so?” he murmured, arms folded tightly. “Fortune favors you, then. I am not the man from your letters.”

Owen Hart copes with anxiety through rules, routines, and the predictable rhythm of his life as a high school English teacher in the small town he grew up. So when his former best friend—and first love—Matt Beckett comes back to town after a career-ending baseball injury, Owen has no interest in reopening old wounds.

Matt was the golden boy with MLB dreams. Now he’s back home, stepping into the role as the varsity baseball coach and long term substitute teacher. When the principal assigns Owen as his instructional mentor, Matt has no choice but to accept help from the one person he never truly got over.

What starts as classroom support quickly spills onto the field. Owen starts helping with the team, until their lives are tangled together from first period to the final inning. And being around each other again makes one thing impossible to ignore: whatever they had ten years ago never faded. A rushed and heady locker room hook up turns into an off campus high heat situationship they aren’t ready to label.
