This morning's hot take is brought to you by my reading of a Qualifying Exam this morning. Stop using Latin in writing. All of it. Yes that includes et al. And etc. And e.g. And viz. And every other Latin phrase that has an english equivalent.
Curious the number of faculty who will gladly carry water for the "university endowments don't work like that" crowd
I'm not going to wade into the fluoride in water debate (ha!), but let's at least get our messaging right. We can't simultaneously lionize and demonize the word "natural." Contrast : Ephedra is a natural plant extractive Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral in soil, water, and rocks
23ANDME: we're bankrupt ME: uh oh are you going to sell my DNA? 23ANDME: yes but it won't be a problem MY UNAUTHORIZED CLONE: yeah stop worrying so much fuckface
Does your culture make a sandwich or wrap of some kind, containing deliciously seasoned meat? Do you also put French fries on it? We could probably be friends hmu
Reminding everyone at whatever conference you may be attending that a comment is not a question

Reminds me of the time I entered the job market in 2010 with my fresh PhD diploma. The "Great Recession" was technically ending, but job growth was still slow. I talked to every OM chemist I could find at ACS San Fran in spring 2010 to see about a postdoc. Nobody had funding.
Senior chem majors spoke with @laureloldach.bsky.social, @rowanwalrath.bsky.social and I and shared how federal funding cuts are starting to shape their career paths. cen.acs.org/careers/empl... #ChemSky @cenmag.bsky.social
With the number of review requests I get one can only assume I am one of like 5 people actually reviewing manuscripts anymore
So has anybody started the “who’s going to ACS thread” yet?
That the Vice Provost for Engagement and Public Relations at Liberty University doesn’t understand The Golden Rule (Matt. 7:12) is probably the least surprising news of the morning
Dunno if anybody else has been trying to submit a PRF proposal, but it has been an UNMITIGATED DISASTER from start to finish.

It's Friday, which means it's time to post logical fallacies disguised as "intelligent discourse" I love that mute button!
In case you were wondering how many students would be on campus the Friday before spring break, the answer is zero.
Students! An excellent resource! #chemsky
On a whim I made a blog post about solvent properties to help teach my students about them. Here's the post: depaulcatalyst.wordpress.com/2025/03/03/a... I am hoping to make more posts that blend the concepts students learn in classes with a little more in depth info related to the literature.
Is it blasphelicious to eat King Cake on Ash Wednesday? To my credit FedEx got it here a day late
The snowmelt dripping onto my windowsill and my desk clock are tapping out of sync and creating a beat frequency that makes me want to start the weekend early
Pursuant to our previous discussion, here is our 3D printed 3D printer having 3D printed a tensile testing specimen on a 10-g scale #chemsky
We're back!!! First preprint of the year (3 more on the way). Here, we used microalgae to produce a 3D printable resin: Squeeze the oil from the microalgae, a couple of simple reactions (#chemsky), mixy mixy and there you have a strong bioresin. chemrxiv.org/engage/chemr...
