Hearing about Kavinsky this morning and remembering how we actually booked him for the KIXEYE holiday party back in 2014(?) and still have video of the performance. I remember thinking what a weird vibe and mix it was for a holiday party. But he was great and it was fun.

Hi everyone, today me and 22 others at Double Fine were hit by layoffs today. All the people who lost their jobs today care so much about the games they make and the people they work with. If anyone is looking for a tools SE with 7 years of experience and who brings baked goods on Mondays lmk.
Asking for a friend: Has anyone used Ultralight UI? Does anyone know of any games using Ultralight?

If a team makes a game that gets great reviews and doesn't sell, that's a biz failing but the silver lining is you caught lighting in a bottle -- protect that team! It's worth its weight in gold. If you jettison the team but keep the biz people, I don't know what to tell you

Pay attention to the folks who say nice things about absolutely terrible people. They are not your friends.
Just watched The Sheep Detectives with my 10yo and it was exactly this. Kids need more movies like this. And I’d argue, especially preteens. There’s a lost type of movie for 8-12yos that just isn’t being made anymore. We need more than Dog Man and Minions and Mario.
Kids need/deserve traumatic films. Films that show death or lasting consequences that aren't resolved almost instantly. Fear, anger, grief and frustration should be part of kids movies. Kids arent stupid, they feel big emotions just like adults, they deserve to see those experiences reflected back.
I want to re-emphasize one part of this Xbox story: Half of the 3,200 cuts are happening today and half are happening in the next 12 months. In other words, even people who survived today's layoffs will have to spend the coming year wondering if they're going to be next.

A lot of the same people who argue that loot boxes killed games are online bragging about how much they made betting on Polymarket about airstrikes.
This was how he reacted to notes on HIS films... ...when he was producing and defending another creator's work from the studio's editing scissors, he had a completely different tone like this bit about The Elephant Man. Mel Brooks is the best.
‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios

I just made this. I used an existing template and a quick screenshot. It's jank and silly but it took two minutes and I made it. Make the art that your team, budget, and schedule allows. If you can only make something with genAI, you've exceeded one of those limiters. I recommend a producer.
Incredibly sorry to all my friends at Xbox studios today that either have been laid off, may be going through some negotiation stress, or just may be worried about possible impacts. It sucks. I know.
Placeholder assets was not a problem that needed solving. Pink boxes, orange boxes, Lorem Ipsum, photos of cats, etc. This was NOT holding up game dev. In fact, it takes MORE work to generate an asset as a placeholder as well as QA to confirm PH assets are removed.
"We only used AI for placeholder assets!" Motherfucker, just put in an MS Paint drawing of two stick figures bonking as your placeholder! It's way less embarrassing and if they're found IN the final game, it'd be way funnier!

It's never been easier to make and ship a game. It's simultaneously never been harder to make money on any one particular game. Over 25,000 games will ship this year. Over half of them likely won't make back the money it cost to list them, and easily 80% aren't likely to make back dev costs.
Remakes and sequels are the safe revenue earners that allow companies to take chances. FIFA and Madden are the reason we get games like Split Fiction, for example. I get the fatigue but when looking at a broader portfolio its better to look at the balance.
