Amnion drew from my depression and isolation in my mid twenties Lost Witness drew from a relationship that didn't pan out, getting over it, getting into a better relationship and that not panning out And Killer Kagami drew from my general disgust with the world from 2016 to now #HorrorWritersChat

Making it personal. Q3: #HorrorWritersChat - In what ways has your own history (past) impacted or inspired your horror writing? Examples: giving a character your childhood trauma, reimagining an experience with a different ending.

I discover the history of my characters as I write I get to know them during that first draft and fill them out in re-writes My main character in Killer Kagami for example is an exile, and I needed to figure out why he was there, what he did before and what he wants to get out #HorrorWritersChat

In Killer Kagami - set on that space station I've shared prior - there's a district with a nice canal that's all scented and what not A place for reflection and calm And my second book, Lost Witness, is set in a colony between two flash frozen waves, like germs in a glass fissure #CartAugust

#CartAugust Still talking about the features of the terrain. Today: water! Where is it, and can we use it to get around! Is it fresh and life-giving or poisonous? If you don't have water, talk to me about navigable ways

#CartAugust: a prompt game for map nerds! by mcburnellauthor.bsky.com
Natural features: Day 5, Waterways
Rivers, lakes, or oceans. What's the most noteworthy stretch of water here? Is it a navigable way or a death wish?

In general, mountains None in my books, yet, but I've always loved mountains They invite the imagination into thinking they're alive Which in some ways, they are Host to animal and vegetation But that fantasy of them being sleeping sentinels never goes away for me #CartAugust

You shall not pass! Hey #CartAugust crew, time to dive in and really start looking at your maps. Today, we're talking elevation: highs, lows, and if you have neither, barriers to movement. Tell me about the geology, the history, famous explorers who lost their lives there... What do I need to know?

#CartAugust: a prompt game for map nerds by @mcburnellauthor.bsky.com
Natural features: Day 4, Barriers.
Talk to me about elevation changes in your world. Mountains, canyons, caves. Which is most interesting and why?

Well, keeping with what I shown already - and 'cause it's my only map - the outside of the space station shown is pretty much the same at the end as it was at the beginning of the story On the outside at least A whole load of carnage happens within! #CartAugust

#G'day #CartAugust crew! Today, we're living dangerously, brushing up close against the demon Spoilers. The question: if you made two maps, a prologue and an epilogue, would they be the same? And if not, how have the events of the story changed this world?

#CartAugust: a prompt game for map nerds by @mcburnell.bsky.com
Intro: Day 3, A world in flux.
If you were to make two maps, one true to the first chapter of your story, one true to the last, would they be different? In what ways?
(how to treat potential spoilers is entirely up to you)
** Don't forget alt text. I know it's hard to know what to inlcude in images that are really info-dense, but do your best.

Oh yeah My books take place among the last remnants of humanity drifting in space around the last known non-dead planet which they aren't allowed on So the map may as well go on forever I only concern myself with one outpost per book, and explore that as much as is necessary #CartAugust

Hey #CartAugust crew! Still just broad-brushing the basics today. Tell me about the mysterious, unknown, and unexplored. Where in your world is giving cartographers horror vacui? Don't forget to share your map! Check out one another's worlds!

#Cartaugust: a prompt game for map nerds by @mcburnellauthor.bsky.com

Does your world stretch beyond the margins of the map? Are parts of your world unexplored?

Hi I'm HD Beird I write multi genre fare that mostly focuses on scifi horror I've only had one map done so far, for my book KILLER KAGAMI, that also acts as my chapter page and where they take place on the space station Kagami Below is just the art done by the brilliant Martin Walker #Cartaugust
