“It was a scorcher,” McSpadden said, but it was the only way to find out for sure what was really going on at the 330,000-acre #NationalPark Service site 150 miles southwest of #Tucson. “That’s a treasured Sonoran landscape that has been bulldozed."

I cannot see a dead fish as a "conservation success". Bluefin tuna are still rare - they only avoid being technically endangered cos they stabilised at a tiny number. That's not a healthy population, just a stable one. Let them breed and really do well before you fish for them if you have to.

Good Morning & Happy Wednesday Everyone! Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #BirdInABush; any bird in a hedge/bush Alt. is #FlyingHigh; any bird flying high in the sky - juvenile Whitethroat amongst the brambles - Sub-adult White-Tailed Eagle flyover #birds #ECK #birdphotography #naturephotography

A juvenile Common Whitethroat perched on a bramble stem in a bramble hedge. The bird is left of centre of frame, looking right so that its front and right side are visible.
The bird has a grey/brown head and dark eye with a faint pale eyebrow stripe. Its back is grey-brown, turning to rufous at the wings. It has the customary white throat with a pink-grey wash on the breast and underbelly.
The bird is perched in a hollow in the bramble hedging with bright sunshine highlighting its head, breast and upper wings.
The foreground and around the bird are brambles with fresh, bright green leaves and patches of the field in the background are visible through the hedge

For AB's #BirdoftheDay theme of #50ShadesofGrey, here's one from June of a Fox Sparrow taken in Central OR. This is an interesting one for me, as it's the "Thick-billed" subspecies, very different in plumage from the "Sooty" group that I see more locally. #Nature #Photography #Birds #Oregon

Concrete and asphalt trap heat overnight in tropical cities, amplifying extreme heat. Solutions like urban tree canopies and green roofs can cool streets, but many lower-income megacities struggle to afford them ahead of projected record temperatures. Adam Litchkofski reports for #Mongabay.

Oregon passed it's record fire season a couple weeks back, and things are still going. Relief is unlikely to come until October at the earliest. The record will not just be broken, but obliterated.

Canada's 2026 wildfire season torched 3.8 million hectares, with 94% burning in just five weeks. A @wwattribution.bsky.social study finds climate change doubled the likelihood of these conditions. Researchers warn that physical limits to wildfire adaptation are being reached.

I took this photo in Big Bend in 2014. The blue land in the distance is Mexico. The only sounds were the wind and the calls of Chihuahuan Ravens. The borderlands between Texas and Mexico are beautiful, and destroying this ecosystem is a profound violation.

A view of the Chihuahuan Desert in spring, with a large ocotillo in the middleground. In the distance, under a blue sky, are a layered series of mesas, which are blue due to their distance from the camera.

Some more smoke pictures of the Wright's Spring fire... These were taken on our way out yesterday (from the road, but I wasn't driving). All closer to the fire, showing the absolutely massive plume being put out.

Good morning birders. Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #BestFootForward- any bird taking a step forward or standing on one leg. #ASplashOfColour- Celebrate vibrant plumage or colourful backgrounds that complement the bird. #birds #photography #ECK

A Little Egret coming in to land on a lush green field, its brilliant white wings fully spread and its long black leg extended forward, with yellow-green feet reaching towards the ground. Its slender black bill points ahead and its alert eye is clearly visible. Sunlight illuminates the delicate wing feathers, while the softly blurred green grass and sparkling highlights in the background add a fresh, vibrant feel to the scene.

Got chased out of the field by the smoke from the Wright's Spring fire, burning near Klamath Falls (and still growing, up to 34k acres since Thursday). Here are some pictures from our field site from yesterday afternoon, when the AQI was probably around 400.

Smoke in the forest.A really cool site called Lookout Rocks that we hiked through on our exit. This is the view west towards the fire, the land below totally obscured by smoke.A view from the South Fork Sprague River valley looking up towards a fire lookout just a few miles distant. If you zoom in on the peak towards the middle of the picture you can just make it out.

The entire horizon North of me is a wall of smoke from the Wright's Spring fire burning near Klamath Falls. This photo was taken from our field site on the Sprague River. In no immediate danger, but the smoke will be rolling in tomorrow.
