I live in Tacoma and I write about movies. thechinesecinema.com
I wrote about The Odyssey, what I think translators Emily Wilson and Daniel Mendelsohn got right and wrong, and Christopher Nolan’s growth as a filmmaker. open.substack.com/pub/fcardame...

There’s an anecdote in the latest Bois video (on the Nolan Ryan/Robin Ventura fight) that seems to explain a lot about the Mariners hitting struggles this year.
“Been Caught Stealing” Jane’s Addiction — Ritual de lo habitual (1990)
Going to the Mariners game tonight. It'll be 90 degrees out with poisonous air and the team is playing so bad lately as to be basically unwatchable. But at least we'll get to show up three hours early to see batting practice.
“All I Want” LCD Soundsystem — This Is Happening (2010)

I have several “favourite films of all time” in my head at once, but on many days, Stanley Kwan’s CENTRE STAGE, his post-modern biopic of Ruan Lingyu and the glorious era of Shanghai modernism, starring Maggie Cheung, is at the top of the list.
www.nytimes.com/2026/08/05/m... Less melodrama than meta-drama, the first movie to address the history of Chinese film — conflating the golden age of Shanghainese cinema (and Shanghai) w that of Hong Kong. Maggie Cheung proves herself a unique silent star — as contemporary as she is anachronistic.
So, uh, that trade deadline went pretty well for the Mariners.
Watched the first episode of Seahawks Hard Knocks and I’m ready to run through a wall.
“Nearly Lost You” Screaming Trees — Sweet Oblivion (1992)
Quite possibly the greatest photo from the @nytimes ever!
I watched this movie called The Furious. You all heard about this one? Got some cool fights in it.
Here's a post-festival marathon top 20 of the year so far.

Wrote about Tom Waits for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Bonus: This is the first time hi-res video of his duet with Neil Young has ever circulated! (The version on YouTube for years looks like it was filmed on a flip phone)

“The Good the Bad and the Ugly” Ennio Morricone — The Soundtracks (2007)
A thing that has been obviously true for awhile now remains true: the people who own and run the Seattle Mariners are cowards.
