Because I am actively researching and writing about the FAA practically every day, I spend a lot of time reading about accidents from the 1970s and 80s. You have no idea how incredibly dangerous it was back then. No idea at all. Just read the commercial crash stats for AK in the '90s. Good grief.

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

Canadian penpal sent me a fast bird and mentioned she was trying to get stamps on it so if I know anyone anywhere cool could I hook her up. I mentioned my Namibian penpal but it's not my turn to send one for a bit... but then I got a new letter from Bahrain! That'll do!

"The Empress kept telling Concubine Shu and I to drink less of the medicine, or even better none. She must have known it was a contraceptive. She truly has a heart of stone not to tell us that!" Girl the empress didn't even know you were taking it as well until this afternoon, what do you want

I know it’s so pedantic, but I hate it when people throw toga parties and then wear a Greek chiton off Amazon with, like, a gold meander pattern. That’s why I always teach my students how to tie a proper bedsheet toga—because Rome.

'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)

An embroidery hoop containing a sewn landscape from above. It shows a forest on the right, a line of fire and charred ground with smoke on the left. The smoke is felted wool.

Just remembered the time my friend Danny Sutcliffe (no relation) shared a photo where he’d written “spoiler, he dies in the end” in a Gideon’s Bible in a hotel and some guy angrily replied “would you do that in a Quran?” And Danny said “I’ve not read it, pal, does he die in end of that too?”

Underneath solar panels, plants grew much more and used less water, "Chiltepin pepper plants produced three times as much fruit as those grown in full sun. Jalapenos matched their usual harvest while using 65 percent less water. Tomatoes grown under the array came in at twice the normal yield."
