It's locals week at the Ōamaru penguin colony so we're spending the evening watching little blue penguins coming in to their nesting boxes ♥️🐧

This week on Duck Island: Two bombshells arrive in the park! Will Lefty's head be turned? How will Ngaire react when she finds out? Stay tuned for more.
Mōrena from the gardens! Lovely weather this morning as we eat our buffet breakfast. #boty
this is *exactly* the type of thing the internet was made for
They even made us our own website! My favourite part is switching between the female and male themes.
Ōamaru parkrun has generated an AI slop song and are now playing it loudly throughout the park 😡

Our human friends might need to stop feeding us soon due to bird flu, but until then we're stocking up and getting as round as possible before breeding season starts.
Mōrena! We're Ngaire and Lefty, a pair of pūtangitangi running an unofficial campaign for Bird of the Year 2026 🦆. Lefty has an injured leg, and some nice humans have been feeding us every day to help his recovery ♥️.
Make sure you vote for pūtangitangi in this year's BOTY competition!
Bird of the year starts 4th September! We tried to become campaign managers for the pūtangitangi but missed out. Maybe next year 😭.
Twiggy loves stationery. I find this highly relatable 😂😸🇳🇿

Going through our manuals today, I found one for the old heat pump we just replaced. 20 years is a pretty good innings! I'm obsessed with all the graphic design and explanations about how heat pumps work. Supposedly it was self cleaning but I beg to differ.

Cutting out a simplicity pattern from 2015, but I feel like this hasn't been updated since maybe 1995 😂
Last year, DoC completed a trial in 5 native bird species. With the arrival of H5N1 bird flu in Oz, vaccination will now begin with kākāpō, takahē, tchūriwat’/tūturuatu, kakī & kākāriki karaka. About 300 core breeding birds will be vaccinated. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/h5n1-bird...
DoC to vaccinate rare native birds against H5N1 threat
The plan covers kākāpō, takahē, kakī, kākāriki karaka and tūturuatu.

Our morning pūtangitangi feeding ritual. They know who we are and fly over to greet us now 😍. #aotearoabirds 🦆🦆🇳🇿
Massive #aotearoapets diplomacy milestone today. Everyone is obsessed with the couch in front of the fireplace!
Thanks @bsky.app and @samuel.fm! Custom feeds running our service will now show pinned posts correctly as "📌 Pinned" in Bluesky on web and mobile 😁.
I've been lucky enough to find two lengths of merino interlock in op shops over the last 3 years. I treasure them, and the scraps too. I'm always looking for things I can make out of smaller and smaller bits. Mittens are about the limit 😂 #garmentsewing #jalie2318 Bonus duck content 🦆
Heading outdoors? Here's the latest on protecting wildlife if avian influenza #H5N1 arrives in #NZ. ↔️ Keep your distance – stay away from sick or dead wildlife. 🥾 Clean it - clean your gear between wildlife spots. ☎️ Report it - if you see >3 sick/dead birds, call 0800-809966. mpi.govt.nz/bird-flu
Well, I made up my new bandinos - one for the lovely gal gardener and one for me, and one for ?? A spare anyway. So warm! They have two layers of merino interlock. It becomes hilariously mallard-mating-plumage once I add my snood too 💀 #garmentsewing Next to try: mittens 👀
We just saw about 500 birds flying in a big flock migrating towards the north-east past Ōamaru. Maybe seagull sized? It was hard to tell. Does anyone know what they might be? #aotearoabirds
Did you think I'd stopped filming the pūtangitangi? Wrong! Here's a compilation from a few days ago and the day before that (two takeoffs!). My favourite part is when Ngaire is yelling, set to take off & harass another shelduck - meanwhile Lefty is on board but gets distracted by more food. Bless 🪶🇳🇿
