purveyor of staircase wit & one-handed economics

introversion is no excuse for not maintaining a busy social life. my friend Shane is really good at running and is both able to and enjoys running really long distances a lot more than I do. he’s clearly a genetic freak. that doesn‘t mean it’s any less good for me to go running than Shane.

an AI is going to kill the human race with this but it’ll be because it decided “generate a lethal and highly contagious virus“ was a reasonable step in answering the prompt “get me a burrito”, not in some master plan to replace the human race and pave the planet with solar panels

*They used genome *language models* to generate the viruses?! Like with William Burroughs, "language is a virus from outer space"? *Obviously "They" are gonna cull the human population with this, but death by AI-virus would be a cool William Burroughs way to die www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

I’ve been wandering through the medieval churches of Europe for the past month. A thought arises: the difference between 80s 40k art and modern 40k is that the 80s artists were referencing the actual gothic; modern 40k references itself.

I genuinely hate the push to make smoking a thing again. I have watched so many drawn out, ugly, painful deaths from smoking. It makes everything disgusting. It enslaves us to the worst kinds of corporations. There’s ZERO positive here.

there is very simply nothing like this game. the finished product may weigh fourteen pounds but it is impossible to measure the weight it has placed on the minds of me and my mortal friends. beware. wizard madness awaits.

SEVEN-PART PACT, my fantastical ornate TTRPG about powerful wizards, asymmetrical board games, and the pressures of masculinity is now launching on kickstarter! www.kickstarter.com/projects/sjg...

if you are Australian and you are reading this before midnight on 30 June you should probably make another charitable donation today the government will literally give you free money in exchange for donating a larger amount of money to charity, why would you not to do that?

there’s three paths: ASI never happens and we muddle along, we build a pro-human future that is friendly to all of us, or we lose. there’s no special pleading based on how many zeros you accumulate in your bank account in the lead-up to the singularity. no special future which is pro-wealthy.

many seem to be reading this essay as a statement that AI *will* take all our jobs and kill everyone, rather than a *response* to the idea that *if* AI does develop the ability to take all our jobs and kill everyone, owning some shares in OpenAI will mean that you get to pick who gets killed.

New post: superintelligent AI won't just lead to a "permanent underclass" but to the disempowerment of all humans. borretti.me/article/no-o...

A screenshot of the first two paragraphs of the linked post. The title is "No-One Escapes the Permanent Underclass". The text below reads: Shall I end this life a pauper? If AI can do all work at human level or better, what stops corporations replacing us all with AI? This is the permanent underclass meme. The idea is: within a few years, all white collar work will be automated by AI, at which point there is no social mobility. The main way people cope is, they tell themselves: if I work hard, accumulate capital, maybe join one of the big AI labs, I might secure my place in the future.

I want to argue this is a fantastically short-sighted view: if there is a permanent underclass, you won’t escape it by owning property, or shares in Anthropic or OpenAI, or guns, or anything else. And neither will the billionaires. You, me, Sam Altman, Dario, everyone who is made of flesh and blood, will be disempowered and replaced by machines.

I have met a number of people who worked with Keir Starmer in his pre-political lawyer life and this aligns with how they described him - one of the kindest, smartest, and warmest people they’ve ever worked with. As it turns out, being personally kind/warm/brave/lovely is probably not sufficient!

every Labour MP's note is like "Keir Starmer is the kindest, warmest, bravest, most wonderful human being I’ve ever known in my life. I believe he must immediately provide a timetable for his resignation."
