NAB GIRLS FOR MASH NOTES TO POLICE CAPTAIN

Rose Halik, 22 years old, and her sister, Ella, who is four years younger, are stenographers. But they didn't write enough letters to satisfy them in business hours. In their spare time it is charged they wrote love letters to a handsome police officer, Capt. Richard Gill of the Lawndale station, which explains why they are in the psychopathic hospital.
The captain was annoyed by the letters. Other persons who received missives from the sisters said they adopted a threatening style in their writings. This led to general complaints, according to officers at the station.
Yesterday the girls, who live at 2647 South Millard avenue, a block from the Lawndale station, went in to se the captain. They took him a box of candy. Capt. Gill, annoyed by so much attention, took them into custody and summoned City Physician D. J. Jones. The latter recommended that they be held at the psychopathic hospital for examination.

George Herman [Babe] Ruth, one time home run hero and now spoken of as the bad boy of the Yankees, who in the last five years has raked together $300,000 and scattered most of it, is going to wage a fight over the $5,000 fine plastered on him along with an indefinite suspension and he says the fight will end either with him traded or out of baseball or with Miller Huggins, his present boss, retired as manager of the New York club.
The Babe, not quite as jovial as usual, arrived in Chicago last night. He came here because he thinks the $5,000 fine excessive and he's going to plead his case before Baseball Commissioner K.M. Landis this morning. Then he's going to hop the Century for New York to run down rumors that Mrs. Ruth is about to file a $100,000 suit for separate maintenance and to tell Col. Jake Ruppert, millionaire owner of the Yankees, that Huggins is a liar and not competent to handle a ball team.

JAIL YANK WHOSE TRICK DOG EATS COUNTESS' GEMS

VIENNA, July 31. -- Roumanian police in the town of Brasso arrested an American vaudeville actor, Charles Sweck, together with his trick poodle dog, a few moments after the latter had swallowed a $10,000 pearl necklace belonging to the wealthy French noblewoman, Countess Belmont.
Mr. Sweck and his pearl eating poodle were riding in a first class compartment of the Oriental express en route from Constantinople. So was the countess. The lady fondled the canine and later noticed that her necklace was missing. She called detectives, who searched the car, but found no trace of the valuables until they peeked into the vaudevillian's compartment, where they were startled to see the gifted pup coughing up the swag, pearl by pearl, into his master's hands.
