make computer go boop

me whose never seen an opera during act 1: oh they love each other completely I can’t wait to see these characters make logical decisions and live happily ever after! act 4: well fuck

Used Claude to find a genuine 100x perf improve on a hot path due to JDBC mangling some SQL. It will end up being hundreds of hours of compute saved over a year. I don’t know dick-all about SQL really but I do know computers are really fast

if apple were serious about making money they would make a usb-c to 3.5 audio cable for AirPods Max in matching colours and I would have no choice to buy it how can I short the stock

one year later... Today I had Opus 5 create a fairly sophisticated new layer in a graph data service and it worked for 40min uninterrupted and I reviewed it in about the same time reducing some request times by 80% in the end to end perf run. My only feedback was some of its comments were excessive

I set it loose to write tests and went for a coffee. Came back and it had 1. Added a clear state function to the module being tested, and 2. eventually gave up and just hard-coded the result it expected as the return value of the methods being tested At least it gave me a laugh for the day

My wife: “eugh… why don’t boys know what their favourite things are? Like what’s your favourite pasta shape? Mines spaghetti obviously but not the super fine stuff” all because I don’t know what my favourite flower is so now we have debated the merits of five different pasta

My investor told me he doesn't really see the moat in my plan. I explained that's the point. The glacis protects the base of the wall and obscures the ditch entirely. By the time the assault party reaches the counterscarp with fascines, they will be committed and under crossfire from grapeshot

I am very lazy, so the Arch AUR is great for me... but supply chain attacks seem to suggest I will pay for this laziness. should I... Fedora? Would be great to have uniform system between my MacBook Air and WSL and linux box

detective: you're a sick son of a bitch, you know it? that bird was your friend of 10, 12 years and you drop a big fuckin boulder on him. wile e. coyote: i swear to god man i didn't think it was gonna work. it never works. oh god. detective: nevada's a death penalty state.

web site: would you like to download the app for the full customer experience?? me: wOuLd You LIkE to dOwNLoAd the ApP FoR the fuLl cUStOmeR eXPeriENce? shut up web site i hope you fall in quicksand

Just opened LinkedIn for the first time in weeks… the tone has flipped 180 from ai-to-the-moon-saas-is-dead to ai-causing-enshittification-and-ruining-business

1: You realize AI can do 90% of the work. You’re thrilled! You only have to focus on the last 10%. 💃 2: You realize that last 10% is the hardest, most grueling part of the job. 😰 3: You realize your entire workday is now spent exclusively on the hardest 10% of every project. 🤯 Uh oh... 🫠

One person getting AI to write quality code when they know how to build what they’re building is doable. Consistently getting AI to do that at scale for a whole bunch of people who don’t know how to build what they want? Totally different problem.

Outstanding post start to finish I started programming after chat-gpt launched and see myself in the critique. Coding with no autocomplete or LSP has been a salve. Now learning set notation: the gap between “I can read this” and “I can describe a system” is enormous. Gotta write from memory.

I wrote a new blog post explaining why I think more people should practice "freecoding" (coding as much as possible from memory) haskellforall.com/2026/05/type...

Dying for a good online course for PL (as in study of… not vocational style programming courses) Self study is fine but I really miss the opportunity to talk to others and have the shared experience from uni

I have only moderate hearing loss and back this completely. Being in a range of loss that I can take them out and use AirPods Max with Headphone Accommodations to listen to music is tantalising for what could be

Hearing aids. They fucking suck. They SUCK. So fucking hard. The engineering details required to pump 65-70db volume boost out of a thing the size of an AirPod is ridiculous, but I’m confident that the Apple of its prime days could figure that out

I asked Claude for reading recommendations based on the new domain I find myself working in and it suggested two books I already own (unread) instead of new books to buy so AI is clearly anti-publishing industry this is bullshit
