A New Chapter - Nieman Reports

After nearly 80 years, Nieman Reports, a publication part of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard, turns the page on print.

In all seriousness: the last 2 weeks of TikTok posturing and Zuck grovelling, combined with the X insanity of the last year, should show you that an app with a feed that you don’t control serves *other people’s interests* - not yours.

“We’re in an era of fractured social media now, where communities gather in different spaces for different purposes … Bluesky, no matter how popular it gets, will be only one part of a much larger ecosystem that includes X, Threads, group chats and more.” www.nytimes.com/2024/11/22/t...

Bluesky Is Turning Into a Strong X Alternative

Putting the "social" back in social media. Bluesky is a platform for connecting with real people in a real way. Different from other platforms that are algorithm driven with For You feeds that entertain. Social is different and better than Parasocial.

Today on the podcast, I admit it: I was wrong about Twitter. So very wrong. @trondizzle.bsky.social gloats insufferably. We talk Bluesky and (sigh) the Fediverse. And about Iran’s plot to assassinate a Zaidy. www.canadaland.com/podcast/1061...

I truly am loving Bluesky. A return to an algorithm-free chronological feed of the thoughts published by people I want to follow. A place where it is again possible to develop relationships with others connected in communities of interest. Simple language: a friendly place for friendship.

Just my 2 cents. But my goal is to ignore the trolls. Give them zero attention. Block them if they annoy me. I think the worst thing we can do on this site is re-create the ad hominem/ personal attacks that occur across comments on Twitter/insta/tiktok/ etc
