I think in my mind palace the ideal remake of System Shock 1 looks like a bad VHS rip of a star trek TNG episode
Don't look now, but the world has now installed 3TW of solar. Took 10 years to get from 100GW to 1TW. Less than 3 years to get to 2TW. Less than 2 years to get to 3TW. Analysts expect *9TW* by 2036.
The World Crossed a Major Solar Milestone. No One Noticed
The next phase of the boom may reveal a shift in who is gaining access to the technology.

This is extremely Clarke novel side-plot coded (laudatory)
My new paper "The Modal Catuṣkoṭi" coherently translates Mahayana Buddhist philosophy's structure into formal modal logic across all relevant systems. It's the first peer-reviewed comparative-philosophy article with central model-theoretic results Lean-verified. scholarworks.sjsu.edu/comparativep...

I read Nuclear War: A Scenario shortly after it came out and found myself totally baffled by what people saw in it. The scenario is like Call Of Duty game level fantastical - NK has magic SOSUS evading subs and uses them to launch Exactly Two missiles, one at a random power plant in CA.
If youre inclined to give any credence to Annie Jacobsen's Nuclear War or Biological War books, be aware "Roswell 1947 was Stalin sending Mengele-mutants to scare America" is literally something she claims in her earlier Area 51 book

Funny how extremely greebled central Colchester looks from the air. Those rooflines look more like they were grown under evolutionary pressures than shaped by any conscious process.
Colchester, Essex, from the air. Britain’s oldest recorded town, Roman Camulodunum became the first capital of Roman Britain and was destroyed in Boudica’s revolt in AD60. Made a city in 2022, Colchester is one of Essex’s key centres and home to the University of Essex. #Colchester #Essex

so the ball in american football is held like a baby right, it's baby sized. so you might think that this sport appeals to the urge to see men nurture babies but actually it clearly descends from chimpanzee cannibal raids on rival groups
Been watching Taiwanese HSR cab-ride videos lately as background noise. Unsurprising I suppose given the geography of the place, but the density of tunnels punched through mountains is kind of crazy. They are playing openTTD with infinite budget over there.
Cassini wide-angle camera RGB view of Titan in Saturn's shadow taken on 2009-11-30. A certain Dave Bowman could have made a comment about the number of stars visible. Full quality image available at flic.kr/p/8HmgV9
I honestly do not actually understand people’s gut level objections to destructive scanning as a general concept, it seems to inspire levels of revulsion that surprise me. But then I would probably be first in line for a moravec-style destructive brain upload so maybe I’m a general outlier.

One of my favourite science fiction novels is 'Rainbows End' by Vernor Vinge. The year is 2025 (yes, seriously), and the world is a mixture of the familiar and the bizarre. Advances in medicine allow older people to become mobile and youthful again, but these newly young old people are unprepared for the world in which they awaken, full of digital wonders and wearable tech, particularly augmented reality, which is everywhere.

New by me for Sky & Telescope: Jupiter's moon Io is surpisingly fluffy. Also, it's fun to get data from a new (to Io) kind of instrument at a previously studied world! skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-ne...
Jupiter’s Moon Io is Surprisingly Fluffy
Ash from countless volcanic eruptions on Jupiter's moon Io have likely built up the moon's porous surface.

Did you know: nobody died of radiation poisoning in the Fukushima disaster. In 2018, one former worker died of lung cancer that was likely caused by radiation exposure. Studies conducted by WHO and Tokyo University predict no significant increase in cancer death rates due to the disaster.
Sarita P, well-known influencer on the Jovian internet famous for her travel vlogs to rarely-visited places, records her most dangerous vlog yet; setting foot on Jupiter's moon Io. Down here the radiation kills in mere hours, constraining Sarita's time on the surface to only a few short minutes.
Thinking about this Pat Rawlings art - entitled ‘Starwell’ - of a big robot-assembled telescope at the south pole of the Moon, down on the floor of Shackleton Crater where the sun never rises… cool vibes.
