Scoop: Andy Burnham has appointed Graeme Cooke, a former adviser to his chief of staff James Purnell, as Director of the Number 10 Policy Unit. Cooke currently advises on domestic policy in Starmer's Number 10. He takes on the policy chief role initially on a three-month transition contract.

10/ Lesson three: take talent, culture and transition seriously. People need clear roles, training and authority. And Britain needs a better transition system: proper support for opposition planning, earlier civil service engagement and a formal transition period.

Ok seen a few of these stories now. It's weird, given how many mid-term changes of PM we have had lately, that people don't remember they don't have shadow cabinets and there are many reasons they literally can't 'appoint' their picks before actually becoming PM. www.ft.com/content/66ad...

Quite here for No.10 North (if that's what we're calling it). Loads of pitfalls, and I think you do need to keep quite a lot of centre of gov in your capital city, but there is a v good version of this which moves out Burnham priorities. Have written down some ideas on how to make it work 👇
