More than any higher ed development in recent memory, institutional subsidies for AI at R1 universities prove that austerity is a choice. It is not “too expensive” to invest in a humanities research infrastructure; rather, it is a choice that R1 universities make not to & subsidize AI instead.

I feel....hope, like real hope! I just announced in class that NYC was banning AI in elementary and middle schools and my class full of preservice social studies teachers just applauded...unprompted. 1/2

The real "administrative bloat" in education is the money that schools are being forced to fork over to tech vendors that can just keep jacking up their prices year after year, because it would cost even more to rebuild the systems and retrain the people that were built/trained on that tech.

Of course, there's basically 0 chance that the cost of ChatGPT for all stays at $13M/yr. The whole ed tech model is to offer an initial price that's ridiculously low, get schools hooked (ie, by helping them embed the new tech in all their systems), then jack up the price for contracts long-term. 3/

I regret to inform you that these traditional college courses in AI are indistinguishable from the classrooms I sat in at for-profit colleges 15 years ago. Centralized curriculum & branding, technological control, “virtual” libraries, & bureaucratic alienation of labor.

Literally this…and these ruling class families may live on the farm but they ain’t farmhouses. These are mansions. Oh and then their beach houses, or apt in the fancy city. And send their kids to private schools in the city. We all knew/know this growing up in Central CA

Most rural areas have a ruling class. And they want cheap unfree workers & to pass their fiefdoms on tax-free forever. It ain't rocket science. The fact that we're scared to talk about THAT, ime, is what's costing us a lot of rural voters!
