I used to be baffled by the fact the people most excited by AI routinely understand the least about it. Then it dawned on me: They don’t want to understand things, know things, learn things. That’s why they’re excited. It’s what they’ve been waiting for their whole lives; the end of learning.

Twice now I’ve overheard people describe movies as 2nd-person POV experiences. “… that scene where you go down the corridor…” “…the part when the monster’s chasing you…” I’m not complaining—language updates all the time. Just interesting to me. Is this video game culture leaking into film?

Dead Weight is out TODAY! 🎉🥳 It's translated by the very talented @maryrobinettekowal.com, it got a starred review from Publisher's Weekly and a bunch of very nice blurbs from people I admire a LOT. It's available wherever books are sold*! (*In the US, UK rights are still up for grabs!)

Is there a better three album run than Badmotorfinger > Superunknown > Down On The Upside? I know this is the sort of thing old men say when they give up caring about new stuff, but HOLY CRAP.

I’ve only just realised there must be a semantic connection between Boa Constrictor and Feather Boa. Does boa mean “thing that wraps around another thing”? If so, it’s pretty cool there is a word for that.

Wishing a very merry Go Fuck Yourself to everyone who voted reform yesterday May you get the local government you deserve. (Just a shame we have to get it, too).

Not to be a guy who posts about a TV show, but I’m enjoying Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen. It’s got a bit of shared DNA with stuff like Beau Is Afraid and I’m Thinking Of Ending Things.

I was browsing in a book shop today. The staff were listening to quiet music. It was a chill environment. Nice vibe. A customer started singing along to the music at full concert volume. REALLY belting it out, like she was at the opera (as opposed to, you know, a tiny independent book shop). (1/3)

I took a week off work and immediately (as in, the moment I closed my laptop), got super sick. I sort of don’t mind? Spoilers for the movie Phantom Thread, but it sort of feels like my body has done a Phantom Thread on me.
