Tribune: One initiative Pritzker plans to present is a proposal to make it easier for voters to reduce or eliminate local township government by petition. The move would resurrect a decades-long effort to abolish townships, a centuries-old form of government that has perpetuated itself by providing powerful fiefdoms for local politicians and a place for nepotism and double-dipping. Critics argue that township services could be accomplished less expensively by cities or counties at a savings to property taxpayers.
