Péter Magyar has now called on the public to be engaged in a search for a new president, who must be named within 30 days. The transition is a work in progress as Magyar and his team cross the tightrope between autocracy and (one hopes) democracy without the safety net of checks and balances.

In total, Hungary has unblocked €16.2 billion of recovery and cohesion funds that were frozen during the Viktor Orbán era. “We fought for every cent,” Magyar says. “We wanted the whole package.”

😥 “Népszava”, Hungary’s oldest independent daily newspaper is now fighting for its survival. A 153-year-old paper that survived wars, censorship, bans, revolutions and regime changes is facing an immediate crisis. From tomorrow, the printed edition will not appear. 🧵
