We have ambitions to make mead but we want to practice a bit first because I made a little spreadsheet and discovered there's a very good reason mead was historically for elites only.

I will always-and I truly mean always-share this story the Rubberbandits shared about a competition held in Cork to see a classic movie screened by him (which sounds like they're offering water boarding as a prize) and this was the recounting

Facebook message from an unknown male: "George Hook, on Newstalk, used to do a monthly competition to "Win tickets to see a Classic Film with George Hook'. Which to my friend, Patrick, was the worst prize he'd ever heard of. So, naturally he entered the competition and ended up winning 3 tickets to the Gate to see Taxi Driver on, like, a Wednesday at 7. Dreadful. We went along and found a handful of people in the first few rows. But no George. 5-10 minutes go by. We hear, 'Are you all ready for a Classic film?'. George Hook was hiding up in the back. In the dark. No reason for it. He comes down and proceeds to make a speech about Taxi Driver for 20 minutes. Most of which was inaccurate. He had this whole segment he repeated ad infinitum about it being 'Scorsese's first picture' which it wasn't, and 'De Niro helping him kick his heroin habit to get it made' (cocaine, and he was thinking of Raging Bull). All inaccurate, rambling nonsense. He talked all the way through the film, laughing at scenes that weren't remotely funny or even meant to be funny, irritated everyone with his bizarre guttural noises and may have even fallen asleep. Film ends. Lights go up. Everyone leaves. Not a word said. He just disappears into the night. --- And you boys think you know Performance Art?"

Once I was at a Christmas party where George Hook was the compère. He began by saying "before I begin, an important news announcement - a truck of viagra has been stolen. The gardaí are on the lookout for a gang of... hardened criminals". A woman sat next to me said "is this some sort of joke?"

If somebody came to one of my writing classes with a novel about a “24-year-old wunderkind” on Wall Street called Leopold Aschenbrenner who graduated from Columbia aged 19, looked and dressed exactly like this, and crashed the stock market, I’d advise them to tone it down a bit
