I’ve come to understand the appeal of chatbots to regular users: it’s easy. Ask whatever, however, and it will return an approximation of what you want. HOWEVER, if you want to a response that’s *good*, (a) “easy” goes out the window, (b) good luck. Like literally, you need luck, it’s a dice roll.

Oh, another note: whenever you hear someone say the "really smart people working on this stuff are saying X Y Z" know that they have never, for a second, considered A) if they're wrong or B) whether the person is actually smart or C) whether there might be an agenda of some sort.

What gets me about these sorts of incidents is that they illustrate how many people are using AI for COMPLETELY USELESS purposes. There are already a million US maps and periodic tables! You can get them anywhere! What conceivable reason is there to have an LLM make one? It doesn't even save effort!

It’s an obsession with “futuristic”, and a lack of imagination that all their idea of the future come from movies and TV. Unfortunately for us, most “future” media is cautionary tales (and even the ones that aren’t are often ill thought out… because the point is the story, not the tech).

The AI companies insist that the takeaway with these stories is "omg so powerful", but I beg people (especially media coverage) to also consider, "why are we building this if it's uncontrollable and dangerous?", or "if it was avoidable, is it incompetence or intentional that it happened anyways?"

I cannot overstate how good the @defector.com "Why Your Team Sucks" series is. There are genuinely good insights about the state of each NFL team, but the best part is the insults, which are plentiful, savage, and consistently hilarious.

I am really impressed with how well Onion's Infowars is walking the tightrope with its satire. It's so hard to do a caricature of a detestable person without being detestable yourself. Colbert was a master of it, impossibly endearing beneath it all. BOTH Haggerty and Heidecker are nailing it.

I've gotten into cycling. You might expect this to make me hate motorists, but no, I already hated motorists. Who I've really learned to hate: people on battery boosted bikes/scooters. These bowling-ball shaped dipshits, looking like Bowser in MarioKart, screaming 40kph up a hill limp-legged.
