Gonna be real, seeing people talk about the 'Big 3' of fantasy anime including Frieren is so confusing to me. I found it incredibly boring and nothing I've seen elsewhere convinces me any different. Boring characters, boring magic system, terrible at exploration of themes, bad world building.

I think maybe people who know nothing about animation should be banned from discussing any new animated film. Weird subjective judgements about the animation in a trailer looking 'different' to an earlier series or 'amateur' when you can't even describe why makes you look foolish and absurd.

Some of the visual design themes in the new Avatar being reminiscent of those in stories like Hyper Light Drifter or Tunic makes me think that the new series will follow a similar path, and the path laid out in Korra's book 4, that people exploited spirit energy for technology to devastating effect.

I know that the writing will likely be much more nuanced about what happened during the show but god the marketing and general plot for the new Avatar series is going to bring out the most insufferable losers who continue to not know what they're talking about...

I feel like there's been a lot of weaponisation of anarchist and/or anti-authoritarian ideals with the intent of normalising everything from CSAM to literal rapists... You can be against hierarchical systems and still demand justice on violence and sexual abuses, it's kinda necessary in fact.

I think we need to recognise that the rapid adoption of the Unreal engine is actually a very real danger to the video game industry at this point... Not only does it incentivise layoffs, but Epic games will use an effective monopoly to line their pockets further and enshittify the game design space.

Not gonna lie, it's rather disappointing to see Stronghold 4 adopt a similar art style to the older games but keep it entirely in 3d assets... Pre-rendered would just have looked so much better especially given the fact that it's so close to the og art style that was built with rendering in mind.

This mission is phenomenal by the way. Easily one of the most compelling Hive set pieces in the franchise.

my one big takeaway from this years pile of Showcases is that Unreal Engine 5 has co-opted or sort of, I dare say, polluted the visual language of games, where nothing stands out theres a kind of mediocrity that comes with being "photorealistic I guess". PBR substance everywhere, but not distinct
