#WIPSnips The word for August 5 is CARRIER No "carriers" but there's a "conveyance." Early in NOMARA, Kate has a rough start upon meeting the nomari. She gets hurt. But, as Oandah reminds her, at least they bring her with them. #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #SFF

Text excerpt from NOMARA, a science fiction WIP by L.L. Stephens. Snip shows Kate not enjoying her first encounter with the nomari.

“Katharine.” Oandah’s voice punctured the red haze. “You are injured. Do not move too much.”
       “Where—"
“You are on a litter. Be still and be glad that you can rest while others walk.”
Kate felt it now, the rough swaying of her body, the irregular motion. She was being carried. Testing her arms, she discovered her wrists lashed to the poles of the litter. After a while, feeling stronger, she opened her eyes again, turned her head only enough to look over the edge of her conveyance. Oandah walked there, head bowed. She wore her cloak again, hood covering her hair.
       “What happened?”
“You failed. They struck you, almost too hard, but you will recover. Your vehicle they destroyed. I do not think it will function now to get you off from here.”
“But the Alameda,” Kate protested weakly. “The ship will find it.” She would have said more, but her jaw ached horribly, and speaking seemed hardly worth the effort.
“Perhaps. They will not find much but its carcass. What they find will convince them you are dead.”

The word for August 5th is “carrier”

#CartAugust 5: Waterways Rivers, lakes, and oceans are all major players in the Triempery. Especially politics and economics. Sordan is a hub and has a massive lake... but it's key feature is the Rill. The god-machine dominates the water there. But Essera has the main waterway. The Dazun River. 🧵

#CartAugust Still talking about the features of the terrain. Today: water! Where is it, and can we use it to get around! Is it fresh and life-giving or poisonous? If you don't have water, talk to me about navigable ways

Rivers, lakes, or oceans. What's the most noteworthy stretch of water here? Is it a navigable way or a death wish?

The word for August 5th is “carrier”

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'pass' #BookQW #BookSky This is Dan Mackmain's first visit to Ireland. So many things look familiar, it would be easy to assume it isn't really any different to home. Dan knows better. He's been reading up on Irish folklore. The Green Man's Debt - 10th September 2026.

Cover art by Ben Baldwin for The Green Man's Debt by Juliet E McKenna. A grey wolf with pale eyes stands in the shadows of a derelict building with a black and white tiled floor. The wolf is looking straight at you. Its snarl reveals blood on its teeth and jaw.

Book extract reads: We were coming up to the bridge he had mentioned. It was as wide as the road through the town and built from the same grey stone. The ornamental balustrades reminded me of the fountain in the marketplace. I guessed the same mason had done the work.
The Defender’s high driving seat meant I could see over the balustrades as we crossed the bridge. The river wasn’t overly wide, but it was flowing fast. The water was too dark for me to guess at its depth. Rain running off those distant hills must pass through peat bogs before it joined the flow.
Back home, I’d have reckoned there was a decent chance of finding a naiad in there. The ones I’d met would love a river like this. I wondered who or what might have claimed these waters. I realised I hadn’t asked Eimer or Máirtín who or what would accuse a dryad and a sylph of trespassing. I decided to talk to Conn about that first. He’d know the best time to raise it. If we needed to raise it.

#WIPSnips The word for August 4 is BOX Kharys is a main POV character in NOMARA. Through him we get to see a human but not Terran perspective of the nomari. He's a captive, but an exalted one, who gets to see the inner workings of nomari dominance-centered power. #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #SFF

Text excerpt from NOMARA, a science fiction WIP by L.L. Stephens. Snip shows Kharys, a human male, interacting with Arasend, Queen of the alien nomari.

Far above the heat of the plain, the Court of Blue Gardens spread cool, hidden terraces. Tall trees reached with graceful, leaf-laden boughs to catch the last of the light. The sun, for all that it yet hung above the horizon, no longer reached within the fastness of high walls. Kharys watched the sun go, knowing that when it was gone, and night descended upon the golden plain, the Terrans would also be gone.
	Arasend had decreed it.
They were like the nomari, he overheard one of his guardians say in whispers, and they were like men. Strangers shaped like men but wearing skins of silver, or of silk, for they shone like the greater moon. Their speech, the nomari said, came from chitin boxes. They looked for a lost ship—not the kind that sailed the plain, nor the water kind that sailed upon river or sea—but of a kind that sailed the stars. Kharys had felt his mouth go dry, his heartbeat leap, then deepen.
He dared to wonder who they might be. He, who knew of the existence of two races of Men. In all his childhood, he had never heard of a third.
And now he would never know them.
“The Queen will tell them to go,” his guardian told him. “She will tell them that they must leave here.”
	“Where will they go?”
	“To wherever they came from.”

#CartAugust 4: Natural Barriers The Triempery has mountain ranges that serve as natural barriers. The Pillars of the Sky are impassable to humans, so let's talk about the Telarkan mountain range between Essera and Sordan. 🧵 Below is a bit of map (by @domino44maps.bsky.social) and a snip:

Left side of image is part of the world map of the Triempery Revelations series. Map by Dominique Strange. Series is by L.L. Stephens.

Right side of image is a text excerpt from THE SECOND STONE, third book of the Triempery Revelations series. Snip describes The Gate, a breach in the Telarkan mountain range between Trongor and Amallar. It's both natural feature and a result of a man-made cataclysm:

A day later they reached the steeply cut gorge of the Gate. Hans saw for himself how the tale of the passage’s origin might be true. Herberth claimed that it was a fissure in the spine of the Telarkan mountains caused by the Devastation, when the First Creation had literally broken into pieces. Though the Second Creation had restored much of the World, not all its wounds had healed. The splintered sides of this fracture were laid with loose slabs of brittle rock that sometimes broke free from fragile moorings to slide with great rending noises down into the debris-laden abyss below. When this happened, the sound of the valley’s torment was heard at great distances and had earned it the name of Roaring Vale.

Text excerpt from NOMARA, a science fiction WIP by L.L. Stephens. In this snip, which is a flashback to Kharys's story, Oandah makes the move that gets her exiled by Arasend: she tries to take the Queen's prize captive.

In the deepening amber cast by that setting sun, he saw Oandah.
She had grown in dominance, Arasend’s daughter who had not slain him that day five years ago but had brought him to this place and to this fate. Her commands had gained in stature and now she led a twelfth of Eshuun’s warriors. Her triumphs filled the Hall; she had her choice of captives now. Her golden skin caught the dying light and molded it so that it clothed her like fire. As she stood before Kharys, the distance between them measured in a few feet of path, only Oandah’s eyes, themselves the lambent gold of flame, touched him. They touched him boldly, without fear. The wrongness of it struck Kharys dumb with a new, uncertain, terror. She should not be in the garden, and he knew this. Only Arasend ever came to him here or saw him without his veils. Suddenly, the strange, nonhuman conventions his asexual guardians had forced on him were to be honored, obeyed, and he turned from Oandah, thinking to flee. But her hand reached out, and seized his wrist, placing a possessive heat upon his flesh.
	“Kharys, no,” she said.
He tried to pull away, but there was something in her touch, a thrilling, velvet urgency, that commanded him. His whole body trembled in her grasp, though it was only his arm she held captive.

#Cartaugust 2: Triempery Terra Incognita The World of the Second Creation is, in some ways, unfinished. The gods got interrupted. Remember my hand drawn map from yesterday? Below is the final version. More detail! I'll address the unfinished parts in comments. 🧵 Map by @domino44maps.bsky.social

Color version of the world map of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Map by Dominique Strange.

Three shields represent the three empires of the Triempery: Essera (top, with horse); Sordan (middle, with eagle); and Mormantalorus (bottom, with volcano).

Edges of the map show the Pillars of the Sky (east), a mountain range that cannot be (or at least has never been) crossed.

Edges to the west, north and south show the Bounded Sea. The sea is ringed by a boundary of fog. Ships that sail into the fog come out again at some other place on the ocean -- sometimes far away -- on the known map. Where they might come out again is unpredictable and cannot be used for reliable transit. Some ships never return and their fates are wholly unknown.

#WIPSnips The word for August 1 is COHERENT I found no "coherent" but there is a "comprehensible." Close enough! Kate meets with Arasend, Eshuun's Queen, and get's grilled about the Terrans. Kate is also figuring out a few things about nomari power dynamics. #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #SFF

Text excerpt from NOMARA, a science fiction WIP by L.L. Stephens. This snip shows Kate being interrogated by Arasend, the powerful Queen of the nomari of Eshuun. Arasend has legitimate concerns.

Arasend continued to ask questions. About the ship. Did Terrans have weapons?
       “Yes.”
Did Oandah have access to these weapons?
“No,” said Kate, “I don’t see how.”
“If she did, would she know how to use them?”
“Probably. She learned how to use much of our technology.”
Another important answer. Kate began to sense the perspective in which she operated, its planes and dimensions . . . dominance vectors as clearly delineated as spatial strings. A single dominance point might be a weapon, several constituted armor. Kate felt as though the controls of a test vehicle had unfrozen, become comprehensible. She had some control, a workable model. With any luck, it would fly.
