At the #Labour7 & @paulnowaktuc.bsky.social is introducing a presentation on inequality from economist & author Pr. Thomas Piketty (far left of picture), stressing the role of unions in fighting inequality. Piketty himself says "high inequality is not necessary for prosperity."
There's reason for optimism, Pr. Piketty tells the #Labour7 , in that the US is on the verge of losing its veto in the international financial institutions due to its declining share of global GDP. A new era of international cooperation could deliver an agenda focused on reducing inequality.
The TUC's Paul Nowak chairs a dialogue with Thomas Piketty at the L7 Summit: the top 1% captured 41% of new wealth since 2000, the bottom half got 1%. Inequality isn't inevitable – and collective bargaining is one of the most effective tools to reverse it.
In Paris, @paulnowaktuc.bsky.social tells the #Labour7 that "we are moving towards a multipolar world - and our [multilateral] institutions must be fit for that reality." That includes us, he says: "the international trade union movement must ensure the global south has effective representation."
