Thoughts with all the police, fire, ambulance responders and station staff at Euston station just now. Clearly a distressing situation for them all and they were so professional, calm and helpful to everyone being evacuated from the train.

One thing I'd add is that when someone says "I've gone beyond left and right", in most cases it means they've drifted to the far right. Russell Brand is one of many examples.

To carry 50,000 people per hour in each direction, a city needs a 175m wide road for cars. Even if those cars are electric. And then there’s all the parking. OR a city can move A LOT MORE people in a lot less space, with A LOT LESS public money, emissions, pollution, noise etc. Choices. Simple.

No doubt France has a great primary rail network linking (especially) Paris with everywhere. But secondary and rural routes often only see a handful of trains every day. A delay or cancellation on any of these other routes can cause very significant onward problems for travellers!

I’m astonished at the number of people (and especially young people) smoking in Brest. At a pavement cafe on Rue de Siam, there’s at least one person smoking at every single one of 9 tables around me. It makes it thoroughly unpleasant for non-smokers.

Just watched as 3 teenage lads carefully cleared their table after eating at Burger King in Brest. Carefully sorted their rubbish too; one even wiped the table. I need to stop being a cynical boomer, having low expectations of yng people. Most teenagers are kind, polite, respectful & responsible.

We spend billions on road, railway and airport infrastructure in Britain. Yet passenger port infrastructure is only available in plywood: cheap tacky portacabins and wooden sheds, usually graced by torn linoleum floors, tired cafes with broken chairs and a nasty little diesel bus.

There can be few ports in the world as poorly designed for foot passengers and public transport as Cherbourg. The bus service from the ferry terminal is hourly and left 3 minutes before 20 people off the Brittany Ferries arrival got there. 1/

The second series of Austin (Ben Miller, Sally Phillips, Michael Theo) is as bad as the first series was good. Truly dreadful. Should have renamed it ‘Julian and Ingrid’. The actors are good; the script is pisspoor.
