1/10 🧵 Suomalainen media ei kyseenalaista, miksi markkinoiden luottamus on se itsestäänselvä lähtökohta, josta talousuutisia kirjoitetaan. Ilmiö näkyy selvästi, kun vertailee kahta juttua samasta pääministeristä. Ero paljastaa jotain oleellista.👇

13. Hence our dismal conclusion: rather than finding that LLMs free us to do a better job of what we were doing before they came along, they shift scientific incentives (and the playing field of academic competition) in ways that compel us to do more and more, faster and faster, less and less well.
1/13 🔎 Olen ihan oikeasti yrittänyt hahmottaa, mihin Kokoomuksen maine talousosaajana perustuu. En löydä sille kovin vahvaa näyttöä tuloksista: velkasuhde on noussut, kasvu ollut heikkoa ja työllisyyskehitys vaihtelevaa myös sen hallitusvastuun aikana. 🧵⬇️
Aivan kuin tässä oltaisiin yhteiskuntana hiljalleen havahtumassa sellaisiin kiusallisiin tosiasioihin, että: 1) Oikeiston talousosaaminen on huijausta 2) Ahneus on oikeiston toimintaa määrittävä tekijä 3) Oikeiston äänestäjät kärsivät Tukholma-syndroomasta www.is.fi/politiikka/a...
📢 #TOPMed e/sQTL atlas is out in @science.org today! Happy to contribute to this amazing team effort and rich resource for the genomics community: 69k cis-eQTL + 35k cis-sQTL across 6 tissues/cell types and diverse ancestries. Still more to discover 😉🧬 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Cross-cohort analysis of expression and splicing quantitative trait loci in TOPMed
Most genetic variants associated with complex traits are hypothesized to regulate gene expression. To understand the genetics underlying gene expression variability, we characterized 14,324 RNA-sequen...

Very happy to share our pre-print co-led with Nathan Andrews where we reveal splicing and isoform changes in a single-cell CRISPRi screen. For example, GEMIN5 knockdown produced minimal gene expression changes yet extensively reshaped the isoform landscape.
With my postdocs Nathan Andrews and @josiegleeson.bsky.social , we demonstrate the importance and analyze methods for isoform-level resolution in single cell-CRISPR perturbations. TL;DR: Long reads are the way. 3/3 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Current challenges in GWAS integration and fine-mapping for variant interpretation
Over the past two decades, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified thousands of trait- and disease-associated loci. However, the mechanistic understanding of these loci remains incomple...

The proposed cap, and to some extent the current limit to 6 proposals per FY, dismantles MPI science. Less collaboration will be the result.
🧪 One U19 with four MPIs charges four slots for one shared budget. Four sole-PI R01s charge four slots for four separate budgets. Same cap cost, very different funded science, so MPI roles are the first thing PIs drop under renewal pressure.
I wanted to like QED's new 1% preprint ranking. I really did. But the more I looked at the data, the more uncomfortable it made me. Here is my full peer review. open.substack.com/pub/blekhman...

NIH grants have been under political scrutiny since early 2025. But what does the screening process actually look like? What is being flagged? I spent a month digging into leaked docs and emails. We've published the 235-word list that are being flagged by an internal AI tool. And so much more. 🧵
Inside the new political screening that’s stalling NIH grants
Mandatory reviews by top health officials and checks for 235 disfavoured terms have left hundreds of vetted grant applications in administrative limbo.

We regret that our event on Extreme Heat: Improving governance and strengthening action around the world has been cancelled due to the red extreme heat warning issued by the UK Met Office. Our apologies to everyone who was planning to attend the event.
Unpopular opinion: Going straight to AI limits your creatively, because it short-circuits the iterative process you need to develop new ideas.

Exciting breakthrough technology from the lab, now live in @cellcellpress.bsky.social ! Instead of cutting the genome where proteins bind (e.g., Cut&Tag), D&D-seq scars the DNA with a deaminase, allowing single cell genome mapping of TFs and chromatin remodellers!
