On Monday, I'm testifying against the required book list proposed for grades K-12 in Texas. As proposed, the list removed all teacher choice. It is smaller now, and we hope will get smaller on Monday. Even so, it constrains teachers, robs joy, and is one more tic on the "leave" side of the t-chart.

The State of Texas is reportedly threatening to take over and disband our elected State Board of Education if members refuse to pass TEA/Morath’s preferred mandatory ELA reading list. The reply that SBOE member, Pam Little, is sending constituents lays it out pretty clearly.

Even though the SBOE is tasked with this list in reality it is the Commissioner who controls it. The SBOE does not have any staff so we had to rely on TEA staff, ie the commissioner to draft the list. Then the commissioner goes to the legislature and tells them to send us a letter that this is what they intended in HB1605 and encourage us to pass it. Then there are threats that if we don't do as the lege has instructed the lege will disband the SBOE. The commissioner met with each board member to "sell" the list to them. That's the reality unfortunately! I suggest you write your house representative and state senator and the House and Senate Pub Ed committees. ‹ v Reply All .. Mail 16 Calendar Apps
