If I was a columnist focused on BC politics, I would write something pretty strong insider-basebally based on the politician's answers at today's fire-focused press conference. But I've got other things to do.

Ironically the apparently irresistible appeal of consumerist grousing probably represents the single most compelling remaining case for the viability of material politics. It's just, uh, the wrong material politics for anything even remotely progressive or left-wing

This is and was also the beauty of TV news and newspapers. Some news websites still offer this. It's also why we have to and can retrain people away from relying on social media referrals for news

linear TV was genuinely addictive because of the inability to watch what you want. Inconsistent but paced-out rewards the same as a skinner box. You got a big jackpot dopamine bonanza when your favorite Simpsons episode was randomly on syndication that day or came across an MST3k marathon

Because DriveBC isn't great about wildfire-related traffic guidance (when a highway isn't already closed), will suggest that if you are planning on taking the Coquihalla Wednesday or Thursday, be aware it could close, given weather. Brunswick Creek fire about 17 km from highway.

Glad they held a presser today. But although I can still be convinced it miiiiight not have done much, I don't think I was wrong to wonder why the province didn't hold a "be careful, be prepared, we are worried" presser on Friday.

Looking at the weather, fires & some of the tea leaves, it seems this weekend could be quite bad for a few small communities (hi!). I take some reassurance in the hope that, if these worries were shared by fire experts, politicians would have bothered to hold a conference.

The MP for Vernon led a post with Reagan's terrifying-words quote when thousands of government workers are battling flames to save people's homes and communities, including those in his riding. One would hope that would prompt a reappraisal of that sentiment, and yet ..

I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

I don't think this is a big deal logistically, but the BCWS map changes significantly on my iMac (running Safari) when you zoom in and out. Areas that are under evacuation alert/order turn from orange to red, etc. #BCWIldfire

It's not in keeping with the ethos of this site, but there is real political value in many places in not talking about locally unpopular policies that you support.

Whenever a fire season stretches BC Wildfire resources, someone being interviewed for local television drops their opinion that some part of the effort should have been done faster, with more people, more equipment, etc. B.C. is huge and fires are everywhere. There's no cop on every corner either.

And that history informs how many locals view the future. Skuppah councillor Sherry McIntyre: “My great-grandparents lived here and my great-grandchildren will probably live here. This area has always been populated, and always will be.”

TIL - this cloud visible from Vancouver is a pyrocumulus or flammagenitus cloud - it’s the Boston Bar fire. The canyon there is lined with First Nations fishing stations that have been continuously repaired for 1000+ years, sites so old footprints have been worn into the stone.

Call it the Fog of Fire. The Riley Creek fire is somewhere up there, but pretty much impossible to track at the moment. (Apparently there's hope that fast-improving drone technilogy might soon help improve fire intelligence in such situations.)

Clinton has been evacuated. In a very sticky situation, with two big fires close to it. On the plus side, it's in a bit of a bowl and many interface areas aren't densely forested or are agricultural, which helps the defence.
