One plant, 15+ visiting insect species: the power of a native bloomer! This Douglas aster is one of the most popular plants in the garden right now, enticing a diverse entourage of bees, wasps, flies, butterflies, and more. It will keep blooming into October, providing vital late-season resources.

A photo collage of insects visiting a Douglas aster, a PNW native that produces clusters of pale purple, daisy-like flowers. The collage depicts shimmering green sweat bees, fluffy longhorn bees, a compost fly, mason and leafcutter bees, stripy nomad bees that camouflage themselves as wasps, a paper wasp, a honeybee, a small wool carder bee, and a bumblebee.

Some context regarding Moda Center renovations. The Trail Blazers $600 million request is larger than any recent/planned public contribution to an NBA/NHL arena renovation. It's not "market rate" or even reasonable. What Dundon is demanding is an outlier.

Dot plot showing the median public contribution to NBA renovations from 2025 and beyond is $338 million.

New paper out in @pnas.org: this year’s western U.S. snow conditions were pretty dismal, but to what extent was this snow drought due to climate change?  Paper: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... (with Marianne Cowherd, Stefan Rahimi, Yuhong Ye) Thread:👇

Native plant discourse: even with a yard-to-natives conversion it's shocking how many bug visitors are introduced. Goes way beyond honeybees to hoverflies, wasps, ground beetles, moths, lady beetles, jumping spiders, earwigs, spittlebugs, bush crickets...about 15% of species observed & IDed.

You could get mad about dead senator discourse *or* you could enjoy this video of sea lions who have retaken an island with a decommissioned lighthouse off the coast of Oregon and now use the staircase as a giant slide.

1/ OK! We analyzed all ~5,300 pages of public records on the Moda Center deal — every email, text, contract, and invoice produced so far. Before Portland commits ~$850M+ ($1.12B after interest), here’s what every Portlander should know. It’s not the story you’ve been told. 🧵
