I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

all of contemporary transphobia feels so manufactured and fake and it's hard to explain how and why to people who haven't felt it happen at them but like people used to not like Really Care; there were shitty people but like no one built their life around being transphobic

the whole article is well worth reading but here's a particularly grim excerpt from near the end, interviewing one of the creators of the three-cueing system so many kids were taught that ruined their ability to read

When I asked him what he makes of the cognitive science research, he told me he thinks scientists focus too much on word recognition. He still doesn't believe accurate word recognition is necessary for reading comprehension. "Word recognition is a preoccupation," he said. "I don't teach word recognition. I teach people to make sense of language. And learning the words is incidental to that." He brought up the example of a child who comes to the word "horse" and says "pony" instead. His argument is that a child will still understand the meaning of the story because horse and pony are the same concept. I pressed him on this. First of all, a pony isn't the same thing as a horse. Second, don't you want to make sure that when a child is learning to read, he understands that /p/ /o/ /n/ /y/ says "pony"? And different letters say "horse"? He dismissed my question. "The purpose is not to learn words," he said. "The purpose is to make sense."

LRS: I'm going to add to this and say that furry honestly has a *massive* classism problem in general; it's been here for a long time (even since my early days in furry back in the late '00s/early '10s) but it's only gotten worse - having a bunch of comms, shiny toys or w/e equals social capital.

I will say as a service industry physical laborer in the furry community we need to acknowledge how bad of a problem we have uplifting the blue collar workforce that makes up most of our community like. i see posts celebrating The STEM and art and medical but never our postal workers or janitors.
