The decision is highly irresponsible at a time when the EU needs trade partners and political partners outside the US and China (and Russia) more than ever. That Macron has worked against Mercosur shows he is not serious about ”strategic autonomy”. The Commission should proceed on provisional basis.

Today, the European Parliament voted to put the Mercosur trade agreement to the European Court of Justice for review. It was a politically momentous decision, very tight and carried by an unusual majority, so it is worth looking a bit deeper into it.

Acute analysis. It’s essential at this point that “the coalition of the willing” moves from vaguely aspiring to police a peace settlement that will not come, to providing the military & economic backing to enable Ukraine to decide its own fate. Trump’s US is now more help to Putin than to the West.

As things stand, Ukraine and Europe are on the verge of being confronted with exactly the kind of Faustian deal they feared would emerge back in February. The fact that Europe hasn’t moved to block such a deal in the past six months is a failure of leadership and diplomacy. /1

Komission ehdotus EU-budjetiksi 2028-34 ei merkitse sellaista suurta koon kasvua, jota ”2 triljoonaan” pyöristetty nimellinen kokonaissumma antaa ymmärtää. Suhteessa BKT:hen muutos pieni: 1,12 % -> 1,26 %, joista 0,1 py NGEU-velan takaisinmaksua. Rakenteessa myös hyviä piirteitä.

The Commission proposal for the next long-term EU budget aka MFF just dropped. Its overall volume increases very moderately, but the proposal contains sweeping changes to the way the EU spends money and to budget's priorities. Here is my first quick take:
