A terribly shortsighted decision from Harvard! @janerosenzweig.bsky.social is among the voices most needed right now-- and writing centers are needed more than ever, especially when their directors (like Jane) devote so much time to thinking about (and teaching) the impact of AI on the liberal arts.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

I should be adding chocolate and coffee to the acknowledgements section of my book.

That particular edition-- which for some reason was still in general circulation-- was signed by Fernando Ortiz! So I scanned it and then told the librarians it was a signed first edition. I'm still not sure if they took it out of circulation or put it into a special collection.

Just saying-- if anyone is dying to read the first (1940) Cuban edition of Fernando Ortiz's Contrapunteo cubano, I have it! So does Google Books, but they make it inaccessible (why? copyright?)

Currently thanking my past self for spending many hours at the scanners in B.U.'s Mugar Library where I scanned hundreds of pages of first edition books (my research is so historical, I'm always citing very specific editions, usually first editions-- often not digitized and often difficult to find).

I keep thinking about Mia Ballard, who claimed to be unaware of the AI use in her book because she'd hired a friend to edit. I know every sentence of my book so well and I still have copyediting, proofs, and indexing ahead of me. I’ll practically have this thing memorized by the time it's published.

I just saw a meme that said “get in losers, we’re reclaiming the emdash”. People. PEOPLE. Where are your STANDARDS? It CLEARLY should be “get in, losers — we’re reclaiming the em dash.”

Great article by @zeblarson.bsky.social on the parallels between historical research and software engineering-- and why outsourcing documentation to AI in either field is a bad idea.

WHAT IF THE USE AND DESIGN OF TECHNOLOGY IS AN ORAL TRADITION YOU SAY

There should not be an agency to enforce civil immigration laws domestically. If a person commits a crime, the regular law enforcement agencies can handle that and detain the person at the end of their criminal case if there is a conviction. Abolish ICE.

My six-year-old is getting ready to read 3 of her poems on the Youth Stage at the NYC Poetry Festival. Poor kid-- child of a writer-- I can't help but think of that famous Philip Larkin poem 😂 (she's loving it though).

Making final edits to my book, which is based mostly on archival documents that are not digitized—- and therefore not (yet?) in the training data of any LLM.
