One aspect of research funding that it took me a while as a prof to appreciate: Someone who directs significant funding can shape the questions researchers investigate, *even researchers they don't directly fund*. Why? Because many researchers chase citations, and better-funded areas get cited more.

it’s good for social stability when, while the overall economy is doing OK, a huge number of educated professionals and students who held or wanted jobs they were passionate about have suddenly been pushed into unemployment and precarity by a government that’s openly hostile to them, right
Some of the richest people in the world want a racial caste system, and they want scholarly backing for that in the form of racist pseudoscience. And a lot of ostensibly non racist people quietly agree, and don’t like to see those who peddle that pseudoscience excluded from mainstream institutions.

Midway through the boiling point of the pandemic... We were just hitting delta, I was allowed, as a reporter, into the ICU at the UT Medical Center in Knoxville and literally the first thing I heard off the elevator was a family discussing end of life care options in hushed tones. The floor was full
I worked for New York’s largest medical center at the start of the pandemic. There were morgue trucks on the streets. They set up emergency medical tents in Central Park. Healthcare worker colleagues died. It is horrific that RFK Jr is on national TV lying that ICUs were empty.

low info voters are constantly being convinced that Republicans have more moderate policies (and Democrats more left wing policies) than they actually do and the mainstream media is a huge accomplice in this effort.
2004 was when I read an article about how voters liked Kerry’s policy positions **much** more than GWB’s policy positions, but they thought, incorrectly, that GWB had those positions.

Social media rewards identity signaling. It’s easy to grow an audience by telling your followers how “good” they are while attacking the “bad” group. Science communication isn’t immune to this dynamic.
Honestly when I hopped into journalism all I wanted to do was be useful to a community. For me that meant making science cool and not scary. Seems extremely hard to do that for local news though. Even state outfits struggle.
"The period over which a tripling of research publications has occurred ... is also a period of convulsive media change... Simply put, even as there are more scientific papers than ever, there are fewer journalists covering science." 🧪 From @chriscmooney.bsky.social:

How do we communicate about -- or as journalists, cover -- 3.5 million scientific studies per year?

Early takeaways from the IPPNY Spring Conference here in Albany. The industry is bullish on "repowering" old fossil fuel plants. Much of the morning focused on the case for repowering (efficiency, lower emissions, thinning reliability margins). Afternoon looks to be more of this as well.

It’s an uphill struggle getting people to accept that Christians can be bad people. But the even harder truth that people urgently need to grasp in this time of Christofascism is that for some understandings of Christianity, to be a GOOD Christian is to be a BAD person. Denial makes things worse

Sorry, to clarify, the order does not name a specific transmission line but blocks funding for *future* OSW transmission needed to meet climate law targets. There were 28 proposals from four developers in the running. If I understand correctly, the Propel NY project is still moving ahead
NY’s Public Service Commission just voted down a major transmission line, years in the making, that was supposed to bring offshore wind power from Long Island into NYC. Commissioners say they cannot justify charging ratepayers for the multibillion-dollar project when feds are stymying OSW
