Ice core scientist

Letter in today's Times by climate scientist Sir Brian Hoskins: "The discourse around net-zero is increasingly decoupled from…science and our changing weather. "Net-zero is not an arbitrary slogan, rather it is dictated by the laws of physics."

Important to defend this. The problems of climate change won’t go away because we don’t measure them but they’ll certainly be harder to solve. @royalsociety.org

A new statement from presidents of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medicine, and National Academy of Engineering reaffirms the importance of the Ocean Observatories Initiative to U.S. #OceanScience. Read: https://ow.ly/oqPZ50Z9ym5

The science is clear. The stakes are real. AGU condemns the repeal of the EPA Endangerment Finding — a decision that rejects the overwhelming evidence and undermines climate accountability. We will continue to defend science and advocate for evidence-based policy. buff.ly/wX1BQ2t

🧊Our researchers have just finished analysing ancient Antarctic ice spanning 1.2 million years of climate history! The Beyond EPICA project extends the ice core climate record by 400,000 years, helping us to understand long-term climate patterns and improve future predictions.

In a UN speech today, President Trump said that "all of these [climate] predictions were wrong". Back in 2019 I led a research effort to digitize old climate model projections and assess how well they did. Turns out they got future warming pretty spot on!

I doubt there is a “cause” for autism, but if I wanted to test for possible contributory factors, I wouldn’t ask an economist or a lawyer. I’d ask a medical scientist who could tell me what the scientific literature tells us. All of it: not just the bit that gives the answer I want to hear.

If anyone is reading, then I have repurposed the Wacswain account to show my name (Eric Wolff). The ERC project has ended, so I can’t claim to speak for its members any more. But I will start posting here again, mainly about science but I may be tempted to give my opinion occasionally as well!

In July 2025, the U.S. DOE released a climate report tied to EPA’s proposed rollback of emissions rules. The report claims to challenge decades of climate science… But scientists say it is unscientific and misrepresents key findings 🧵 science.feedback.org/review/misle...

Misleading U.S. Department of Energy climate report chooses bias over science, climate scientists say

DOE report written by climate contrarians shares misleading information on climate change and excludes well-established evidence.

Our project “BeyondEPICA” collected ice at least 1.2million years old. Now we are meeting at this palazzo in Venice to finalise how it will be analysed to show us the climate and CO2 across this fascinating time period!
