THE PRISONER is a spiritual sequel to those YA books people used to write about teens with wings or superpowers or whatever being tormented in labs. real catnip for sadists who want plausible deniability

Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.

day 24 of Knee Broken. pending a final decision on surgery from the bone surgeon, it seems like it's good news! my x-ray from today showed some matter regrowing in the fracture space, indicating healing, and minimal displacement (some displacement is basically guaranteed)

today a cleaner came (to compensate for my total inability to do chores right now) and Roxy HATED it. when the vacuum cleaner came on she bolted into the room where I was, tucked herself onto the kitchen counter beside the fridge, and did a proper, deep-in-the-chest cry of feline sorrow

day 21 of Knee Broken. having gone outside twice yesterday I am sore and exhausted today. nervous about seeing orthopaedics on Monday, irritable at having been reminded of my limitations. morale not great, though leavened by this diva over here

Roxy the cat embraces the navy blue pillow I’m using to support my leg

last night I finished VENOMOUS LUMPSUCKER by Ned Beauman, simultaneously a harrowing near-future thriller-y romp and a brutal climate-fiction satire on the theme of carbon credits. bleak, funny, appropriately down on the concept of England. recommend!

st vincent at the sf symphony (with orchestra!) was off the hook. just a phenomenal musician and performer. i don't think i have ever seen anyone play the guitar like that? absolutely worth the stress of getting there while functionally disabled

uncommon Waverly win: successfully got to a medical appointment totally unrelated to Knee Broken, have so far only needed to ask two strangers for help (holding a door; assisting me in crutching up onto the sidewalk from the street)

Ben was my mentor at the Lambda writers’ retreat in 2019 and he was a sweet, gracious, incredibly insightful man. I’m so sorry he’s gone; I’ll always remember chatting to him on the bus home from karaoke, feeling weird and liminal in a way I think he would have enjoyed writing about.

i am honestly distraught "To be careful with people and with words was a rare and beautiful thing." RIP to one of the greats.

day 19 of Knee Broken. Isaac has started showing me THE PRISONER now that we are out of vampire show, and i am captivated. it's a rare show that can convince me that something i know (from a doylist perspective) is not going to happen MIGHT be happening, actually – feels exciting, feels cool

*standing up on the plane* okay i'm gonna read "america" by allen ginsberg. don't worry i'm not gonna do the n word part. okay. america i've given you all and now i'm nothing. america two dollars and twentyseven cents january 17, 1956. i can't stand my own mind. america when will we end the hu

day 17 of Knee Broken. worked out remotely with my personal trainer this morning, upper body stuff only, and now my whole body is sapped. morale whatever; feeling sad about writing out of nowhere lmao. friend coming over later with takeout though which will be lovely

day 15 of Knee Broken. today I’m really sleepy and disinclined to do much. that said, my crutch pads came and while not perfect, they do help. morale middling, Roxy still cute

Day 14 of Knee Broken. today’s big news is that Roxy has her little head resting on my good leg. really important stuff. morale good due to Roxy and her ways

day 13 of Knee Broken. have to admit, the novelty of Knee Broken is wearing a little thin as we approach the two-week mark. that said, i've moved up a difficulty level in civ 7 and i did SO much solid work catch-up today, so it is not all bad. also roxy's currently bathing on the bed with me.

day 12 of Knee Broken. wishing I'd gotten a haircut before all this happened. having to play a depressing amount of catch-up on work missed last week. morale kind of mid, honestly, though I did successfully get out of the shower unaided this morning, which was cool.
